“Go! Go!” The shouts of spectators echoed off of the walls of the pool. The smell of chlorine filled the air. I was leaning over the rope, screaming at my sister as she took her last strokes into the wall. I whipped my head around to look at the scoreboard. “She got it!” My sister had been working for months to achieve her “A” time standard. As she touched the wall, I felt multiple emotions wash over me, first overwhelming pride, respect, then joy filled me. Although this achievement is significant for any swimmer alike, it was especially so for my sister. My sister’s name is Maria. She was dropped onto her left hand when she was one years old, and because of this the muscles in her hand have become less developed than those of the same age

Eight-year-old Lucy hesitated as she approached the pull-up bar, reluctant to proceed. Skills-tests started today; the day she would demonstrate her progress at TAG Gymnastics' summer program. Uncertain of her own skills, Lucy studied her fellow gymnasts as they prepared for their turn. The girls, self-assured and wearing perfectly-fitted leotards, were built for gymnastics: long, lean, and athletic. To pull themselves up and over the well-worn, padded bar would be easy for them.…

It is Saturday morning and the ringing alarm clock wakes me from my deep sleep. I look over at the clock that reads 7:00 a.m. which means that it is time for practice. While all of my friends are still sleeping, I am on my way to my six-hour gymnastics practice. I have only been a gymnast for ten years, but the life lessons that I have learned will last forever.…

I pulled myself out of the pool, feeling both exhausted and ecstatic. My coach’s eyes became teary as I approached. He told me that he was so proud of me, and that seeing my jaw drop after seeing my time was the reason he was still coaching. My smile wide and my legs still trembling from the race, I thanked him for supporting me and making me realize I had the potential to swim faster than I had ever thought. My team was erupting in cheers and congratulations as I walked to the…

My fingers and legs persistently trembled after I finished playing Mozart’s “Viennese Sonata.” I stood up from the piano bench, bowed and the audience began to applaud; immediately I left the stage as the crimson curtains closed. I broke into a series of miserable sobs; it felt like my whole world was plummeting before my eyes. The term atrocious would be an understatement to describe the chaos that had occurred. Whether it was the nervousness that I felt as I performed in the presence of my family or in the intimacy of the venue, I made a blunder of the performance; the notes jumbled all together and the beat became unsteady.…

The bed mercilessly taunts my exhausted limbs to return but my determined heart persuades me to brave the trial by water once more. As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…

Back to school season had knocked on every door of Tirana to deliver a message: September has arrived and so has school. Although I was enthusiastic to reunite with my classmates, the idea of innumerable assignments and tests ready to conquer my spare time was inevitable. This dreadful forecast sent a cold shiver down my spine, paralyzing me for a couple of minutes, struck by the realization that I would not be able to participate in any sports. Later that day, I turned on the TV to notice the news flash: “The mayor of Tirana, Mr. Veliaj, has inaugurated the newest volleyball club, Tirana Volleyball Club, which is perfect for interested children in this sport.” Despite the fact that school was around the corner, I decided to throw my insecurities…
