A young lady excited to see a huge metal fly high up into the clouds. At the age of 12 I left Korea, my homeland, leaving the childhood friendships, memories, and identity, guided by my parents who have committed to become a missionary. The missionaries who committed to work without any payment. I was simply excited, too naive to know what leaving meant. I landed on the black rock, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, under a blazing sun, approximately on the other side of my "home”. I was happy child who knew how to say "hi", "yes", and "no" in the language of this foreign land. I had no clue what this beautiful lady with dark hair and skin or a tall lady with green eyes and blond hair were saying; I just wanted to ask where the restroom was. …show more content…
Biting sun was undervalued, deep endless and meaningless water that reminded me that I had nowhere to go. I set down at the desk taking hours for 30 minutes of homework. Every time I spoke, I shrinked because of fear and shame. Kids ignored my opinions because I could not enunciate the names of historical figures. I made two best and only friends during the first 3 years of my new school. They were sweet, intelligent, and spoke my mother language. Now some of my friends in Korea or the students from Korea ask me: “how do you speak English so well?” I tell them without any hesitation, “survival”. Being able to embrace this complex language and culture was a matter of survival for me. The moment I got a visa stamp on my passport through the custom in the airport, I have unconsciously accepted the life long challenge. Around the age of 14, I had no problem surviving in this country. I could find my ways on my own, I could understand what this beautiful lady with dark hair and big eyes are saying. I did not stop myself at the survival; I pushed myself beyond the standard and expectation. Now I am a junior in high school constantly challenging myself with AP classes maintain at 3.9 GPA, proudly ranked in the top 10%. I plan on majoring law or pre-law in college, and go to law

The days of school arrived easy I thought nothing to it throughout my elementary years peace of cake but when the middle school hit it wasn't easy to take what was going on those days. I felt lost on a voyage or caught up in my own thoughts had a sea hag like in Beowulf grendel's mother it felt trying to thrash and hold me back. Keng Lor Beat the Odds “Keng, you must become the role model for your eight younger siblings because they will follow your footsteps. Where you end up is where they will end up”. This quote from my parents motivated me to stay in school, kept my grade point average high, and attend a four-year institutional college. I was born in a refugee camp, in Thailand, and recently migrated to the U.S in 2005.…

Moving to the U.S was one of the many life changing experiences I have ever encountered. Some say that learning a completely different culture especially the language may be difficult, well, they were right! Coming to America did not only come with struggles, changes, and lessons, but it also brought blessings. I think that if you turn a situation around, for the better, you somehow become more optimistic about the situation itself. Talking about these attributes that came into my life will not only explain entirely where I come from, but really how each helped me become the person that I’m today.…

To say my year was uneventful, well that would be a lie. So many things have happened and so many things have gone unnoticed. Where to begin, where to end, what to include and what not to include. So many things to say, that will never be told,so many jokes no one will understand but us. So much life that never seemed eventful at the time.…

I was spring, the trees were blooming and the Mississippi had flooded like it always does every spring, which make the city of Memphis smelt like fish. We were staying in an area near Presidents Island, which was considered a suitable neighborhood and on my first night there was literally a drive by shooting, one of the neighbors across the street had seriously rubbed someone the wrong way. I was starting to question my decisions, anyway, I adjusted, an apparently I adjusted to well later that spring I discovered I was pregnant. Oops! Here I was I didn’t particularly care for my new surroundings, nor did I care for my new job.…

Ah, I think to myself today we finally have a rainy day. I can hear the water drops from outside and know that it must be raining. I’m so excited that I want to jump up on to my cousin Ellie’s bed (who is sleeping next to me) and tell her it’s raining. I know she would be excited too, but would also try and hide that she was angry at me for waking her up so early. Instead, I slip out of the room without making a sound.…
