I can remember my mother hugging us tightly with tears rolling down her face before letting us on the plane. It was my at the time 8 year old brother, 2 year old sister and I waving goodbye to mommy on Monday September 10th 2001. She cried out, “ see you guys in a few days, I love you!” As we walked on with our book bags my eyes became watery, stomach suddenly tight, and heart pounding. We approached our seats and there was no doubt that I had to let my little brother have the window seat. Thats what big responsible sisters do I thought to myself. We sat down, my brother of course had the window seat my baby sister the middle, and yes I had the boring aisle seat. After the plane took off I lifted my right hand arm rest and let my baby sister …show more content…
“ Hi grandma” I sighed, while my brother and sister gripped my hands tightly on each side, you could see the fear in their eyes. They had never spent much time with her and although she was a small lady she was very intimidating. We finally got our luggage and got into her 1995 blue Toyota corolla that still had a new car scent. Coming from the dull and gloomy fall season in Brooklyn, New York, I was enraptured once again by the beautiful light blue sky and palm trees as we passed the “Welcome to Miami” sign. It took us about an hour or more to get from MIA to Coconut grove because grandma drove at about 30mph the whole way there. I couldn’t wait to get home so I could call mommy and tell her to drive fast so she could rescue us. At last we pulled into the small one car drive way that belonged to the small peach colored house with miniature palms in the …show more content…
I already knew that it was going to seem like an eternity before mommy made it down. We eventually settled in, ate dinner and went straight to bed. After my siblings fell asleep I called mom and we spoke for a few minutes. Mommy assured me that she’d make it in time for my birthday which was on Thursday Sept 12th. As I’m talking to mom, my favorite crazy aunt walked into the house and I suddenly felt a sense of relief. I quickly hung up the phone and ran over to her before she could even put her bag down and gave her the biggest hug. My aunt was this 5’8”, slim, crazy, fly by the moment, blunt, cool lady with long blonde hair and blue eyes. She smoked like a chimney and cursed like a sailor. That night she caught me up on her life and I did the same. We talked for hours until I just couldn’t keep my eyes open

Maddie bounded about as she saw Mom climb out of the vehicle and hastily made her way to the dog down the impeccable tar driveway. We had a gardener who came and kept the grass trimmed and the flowers that weaved around the curves of the long driveway watered. Shortly Mom was back in the car, soaked, fatigued, and annoyed. I found entertainment from the raindrops that raced down the window and silently cheered when I guessed the right one that would win. We were almost to were Daddy was when Mommy…

In her always happy tone, she answered, “Just call me aunt Maribel. And I love you too!” I felt like I wanted to cry, because it seemed that my life was just trapped, then she came in, happy and jolly as can be, lifting me out of the holes I was always stuck in. I will always remember her, though just two days after she said if her brother was 98, she would at least make it to 95, she didn’t make it. I learned to enjoy the time you have with your family or friends before they…

She walked along the winding, worn out trail. The autumn leaves of the willow dance above her head as the cool breath of the evening air tickled her freckled cheeks. She looked up peacefully at the blue sky that waited for night to come, and soaked in the array of colors that overlaid the hilly landscape. About a mile down the stretch, she could see the small lake where her father and her would go fishing. Despite never catching much when she did it was always little pan fish that were enough to satisfy her efforts.…
