"There's no such thing as stars, Lea." My older sister and I sit on the shaggy carpet in my room. “Yes, there are. I saw a picture once.” I insist. “They’re beautiful.” “Okay, two things.” My sister Sara says. “One, they’re not real. That photograph was obviously forged. Two, even if they did exist, they are not beautiful. My ancient mythology teacher said that people believe they were giant balls of fire in the sky that would burn things down on Earth.” “They were what gave it light!” I say, exasperated. My sister sighs. “Lea, the light comes from our moons. Stars do not exist.” I open my mouth to say something, but I know that no matter what I say, my sister will not budge. I have short, glossy brown hair and brown eyes. I am just at the average smartness as the other children in my class. Just the average intelligence after eight years of learning. Of course, I told her who I was, and that cleared up, but some of the kids, when they didn’t yet know my name, addressed me as ‘the short one.’ All the kids in my class are a lot bigger than me, but I’m not intimidated. I always win when we play hide-and-seek, because my quickness and small size helps me to hide and run from others. I am also the best when we play on an obstacle course. My sister climbs out of the window with catlike grace, and beckons for me to follow. I clamber out awkwardly after her. She had already swung her legs over the edge of the overhang that covers the front porch. I scamper after her. Because I haven’t got to the place where Sara is sitting yet, my view of the moons is still blocked by the huge maple trees that surround our house. “Lea, the first pewter moon is about to set!” Sara calls. I quickly make my way over and sit down next to

"Some nights the sky wept stars that quickly floated and disappeared into the darkness before our wishes could meet them." (Beah 80). The way Ishmael Beah describes the stars describes how your outlook at life can cause you to believe the stars are yours or that they are unreachable. Shakespeare's play Othello tells the story of Othello, his recently married wife Desdemona, his soldier Iago, Iago's wife Emilia, and Othello's wife Desdemona. Comparably to Othello and Desdemona's new relationship, Ishmael Beah's memoir, A Long Way Gone, tells the story of an immature boy trying to survive in his new life alone as a refugee and later a soldier.…

When everyone around me was struggling from diseases and starvation, I was curious about almost everything happening around me. My friends were fighting against malnutrition, and I too had to sleep several nights with an empty stomach. This experience taught me to struggle and learn to do something better to help everyone. I still remember all those harsh days living in a refugee camp. There were thousands of huts – shelters built with bamboo and thatched with plastic.…

Topic 2. Tell us a story about a time you found/used your voice and spoke up for something (or someone) you believed to be right or just. When I think back to middle school there is a situation about speaking up that stands out to me. I think a common misconception is once you speak up for someone or something you are reveled as a hero, this isn't true. Infact at the moment I felt very nervous and pathetic even after I spoke up and it wasn’t until later that I realized the impact no matter how small it may be.…

My mother often told me to marry a man who drinks milk shakes. At the time, I was a shy, young girl when she offered this advice. It felt weird to hear, since I wouldn’t go on my first date until age sixteen. It would be with a guy in his early twenties who wore a black leather jacket and large boots with shiny silver buckles. We’d met by chance at the bus stop.…

They say one can die from a broken heart, that you can become so distressed your heart strings pop and that vital organ no longer functions. I almost experienced this phenomenon, or so I thought, when I was nineteen. I met Brad my senior year of highschool and like most other teenage girls, I fell hopelessly in love. Things were great. We went to the movies, the beach and hung out with friends up until 4 months of one of our most memorable nights, graduation.…
