All my life I have been dramatically smaller than all my peers. I have always been ostracized for the fact of my height which, in fact I have no jurisdiction over . I have always lived by the motto “Heart over height” in every aspect of life, and in every endeavor I encounter.
My personality/drive/motivation all was established in 4th grade, where I was cut from my fourth grade basketball team. My coach not only cut me but he had the audacity to tell me that “You can be on the practice squad”, because clearly I was not sufficient enough to play in games. This sparked the

Most things came easy to me, with the exception of Lacrosse. Lacrosse was a completely deviant story for a plethora of reasons. My freshmen year I was not the strongest player on the field and that was adequate (?) with me because I wasn’t expecting to start Varsity my Freshmen year. It was a fun year except for the fact I was reminded everyday: “When you gonna get taller Mike?” “When you gonna get bigger Mike?”. As if I had any control over my height. Sophomore year I worked extremely hard and would always go that extra mile. When everyone else stopped working, I kept going, but nothing ever seemed to impress my coaches or my peers, they never seemed to care. One instance (awk) I thought I was going to get an abundance of time in our game versus another team, considering we were winning 10 to 0, but as I was about to go in my head coach responded “You’re too small, I don’t want you to get hurt”,(seperate these sentences) as if I cared about my well-being, I just wanted to play, I wanted to play what I loved doing. I worked so diligent than I ever have in any endeavor in life that summer, I tried to hone my skills, playing with my brick wall every day passing back and forth, as if he was best

If someone told the middle school me that I was going to lead the basketball team as a captain for three years in a row I would’ve never believed them. But after living through it, I am more than grateful that it got to be me. Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade. I started playing recreational basketball for Montville in the third grade; since then, I had dominated the competition as I hit my growth spurt earlier than most of my friends. Not only was I taller than most of the kids I played with, but I was also faster and stronger. Coming into the tryout, I was confident in my abilities and believed that I would make the team. Upon finding out the results of the tryouts, I was devastated and felt cheated because I thought I was better than some of the kids that made the team.…

Even though weightlifting does not qualify as a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sport, it is one of the most empowering yet strenuous sports to participate in. Generally, the two lifts for weightlifting are the snatch and the clean & jerk, but according to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA), the lifts are the bench press and the clean & jerk. Either way, these lifts aren’t easily learned overnight and require intense training to master. Personally, I should know, because it’s the sport that I train for on a daily basis.…
