It was a Tuesday afternoon and the heat in Mr. Martin's room felt as if we were next to the sun. The schools maintenance crew always kept the furnace on the highest setting possible. “So class what did we talk about yesterday ?” said Mr. Martin as he takes out the 590 page textbook on accounting and finance. “We talked about how to find assets, liabilities and owner's equity,” says Ms. Know” it all in the front of the classroom.” As Mr. Martin begins his lesson, I quietly whisper to my best friend Jake, “Hey man, did you do the homework from last night?” “Nope, I forgot to read the chapter and finish the worksheet. Would you mind if I sat here.” Then he made a face as if he were thinking about it, probably wondering if I were another prankster kid. “Sure, I guess” he says. I quickly start to strike up a conversation, not knowing what to talk about I asked him how he likes our school. “It's fine I guess, nothing bad to say about it.” said Randy. “ So Randy may I ask a weird question?” I said awkwardly. “ Yeah sure, better not be too weird.” he said smiling. “I was wondering why do you wear both of those jacket everyday?” He hesitates and looks as if he's seen a ghost. Seeming as though he doesn't want to tell me, he exhales and grips the pockets of the outer jacket. “This was my fathers favorite jacket before he passed away.” he says “Makes me feel close to him” Shocked that he told me this I sit silently across from him. Walking into the warm, brick classroom, I was greeted once again by the single, depressingly orange wall. The Spanish teacher had tried to cover it with an excessively large calendar to no avail; the wall that was supposed to liven up the room was forever the antithesis of its purpose. Since the school year began, I stared at that wall, sitting between my best friend at the time and the only other freshman in the class. That day, however, the teacher had finally come up with a seating chart, putting my back to the wall and me just one seat down from him. I hadn’t noticed him before, with his nearly straight bangs covering his bushy eyebrows and crooked, peg-toothed smile.…
