I gestured to my dad to keep going and that I would follow him in a few minutes. I dug out my water bottle and drank it. What little water that remained in it was warm and made me more thirsty. I set it down and looked at the trail, at the stream of people going up and down the trail, at the evening sun. I took the time to admire the trail.…
We ran back to the trail and continued our walk. The most exciting part of the walk was when we got to a second field. That might not sound exciting but it was because it wasn’t just a field. Off of the trail along the field, there was a glass house in the woods that never got finished. It was huge, we wanted to go to it but we couldn’t because there were hunters on the land and it was private property.…
Once we had regained our balance we brushed off our pants that had mucky leaves all over them and began to jog to catch up with the rest of the class. As we were running, we stepped in a puddle and were soaked up to our knees in dirty water. Abby and I were both wishing we had flashlights, but they were prohibited because the Bark Lake staff wanted us to improve our night vision and adjust our eyes to the dark. We kept on hiking, trying to feel the way with our feet, making sure we don't stumble over rocks or tree roots. We then came across another large rock except this one was jagged, rough and bumpy.…
It was mostly tiring though. Though the day was tough I knew that I would soon hike Hise MTN. once…
It was extremely steep, with large rocks, trees, and cacti littered around any path we tried to take. After only a few minutes, we had completely lost the trail, and we were constantly trying to follow any small opening that vaguely looked like a path. The conditions were awful; the trail was exposed to the sun, the heat beat down on my back, and every step triggered a jolt of pain from my blistered foot and a fear of dropping down several hundred feet. We did not realize it until later, but we had strayed far off the trail. There was supposed to be a better path up through a section of the ridge with a gentler incline, but somehow we lost the trail near the base.…
The sun was bright and causing an increase in heat and I encountered a split in the the trail the left went along the creek that I could see shining for as far a I could see, then there was a path the led deeper into the lush forest. After contemplating on which path to venture down I decided to follow the lush green forest…
With the hills to my back I stood at the base of South. I dwarfed beneath her, and took my first step onto her distinguished trail. As the hiking started only peoples and sand lay across the path. Then gradually pebbles turned to rocks, and rocks to large, black, boulders.…
Do you remember when you were a little kid and you had to climb on your counter-top to reach a cabinet? I remember it as if it was yesterday, maybe because it really was. All my life I have been dramatically smaller than all my peers. I have always been ostracized for the fact of my height which, in fact I have no jurisdiction over . I have always lived by the motto “Heart over height” in every aspect of life, and in every endeavor I encounter.…
Can you repeat the past from 5 years ago? My answer is no nor do i want to repeat it. Five years ago i would of been in 8th grade and that was the worst school year ever. I was picked on and was basically a loser. There was so much crying i did because i was so hurt by people.…
I work for my dad on our family ranch in Jones Creek, Texas. The work is hard, backbreaking, and tiring. Everyday when I get home I eat the meal that my momma makes for us: there is no arguing whether or not that is what you are having for supper. Every night I get in bed completely wore out from a hard days work, then I wake up to do it all again in the morning. This job is not for everyone, however it is for me.…
Another hot summer in Idaho at another family reunion. I chased after my dad and brother’s cloud of dust; reving my ATV’s (all terrain vehicle) engine I whipped around the land my great great uncle homesteaded on. My confidence grew as did my speed until my wheel caught and spun me right into a log that pierced through the fender and into my leg. It was the first time I ever blacked out. When I came too a few seconds later I was alone; high on the trails of the Sawtooth mountains, blood gushing from my shin.…
Last night my dog bit me! My dad about shot him in the head with a shotgun, but I told him not to because that Bruiser, my dog, is too stupid to know what he did. He still wanted to shoot him in the face so I stood in front of Bruiser and told my dad to lower his weapon. I knew he would because I’m his baby girl and I can get anything I want, but I don’t do that because then I would be a spoiled brat and no one wants that.…
I looked to my left and saw a huge climb, steeper than any other part of the hike. With as shock I realized this was the final climb my dad was warning me about. Nowadays, if I looked at that climb, I would climb up without hesitation. But at that point, it looked like a cliff. I didn’t think I could walk 10 more meters, and here this climb was.…
All of that side of the family was there. Every one of my cousins and my brother and sister were jumping off of a cliff ointo the water. I was mortified byof the thought of jumping into the water from that height. Everyone called me chicken for not jumping. The thought of being more chicken than my big brother, who is, by the way 15 seconds older than me, made me so furious.…
I hummed to myself as I squeezed my way along the narrow path. Soon, the walkway became wider and an obvious path up over the rocks became clear. I started to scramble up, making sure I was still keeping close to the sea. What I saw at the top nearly made me jump out of my skin.…
