A talent that sets me apart from other students and makes me unique is my ability to spell. I’ve been studying words since I was eight-years-old, and it has benefited me greatly in all aspects of life. In this essay, I will take you on my journey of how I started spelling and the accomplishments I earned along the way. When I was in the third grade, my teacher needed one more person for the class spelling bee. Although I didn’t care much about it, I thought it might be a fun activity. I was first in my class bee and placed sixth school-wide. I would’ve won, but I couldn’t understand some of the words the pronouncer gave; he wasn’t the best. The following year, I once again won my classroom spelling bee. I won the school bee and placed …show more content…
I was very hesitant in the beginning, because I tried out for UIL third grade and was told I wasn’t good enough. Turns out, I was the only person to sign up for UIL freshman year, which is where I met my amazing coach, Miss Francart. I won district and region that year, making it to state, which would be held in Austin, Texas. Sadly, I didn’t place. Sophomore year, I also won district and region. Right before I went on to state, I found out that Miss Francart was moving back to Michigan. I was heartbroken, because she was more than just my coach; she was my friend. I did not place at state, because I was more focused on spending time with her. Miss Francart promised she would fly down my junior year if I made it. My junior year, I met a new coach, Miss Early. Although we were not as close as Miss Francart and I, she wanted to do everything she could to help me do my best. Luckily enough, I regained my title as district and regional champ and made it back to state for the third consecutive year. Just like Miss Francart promised, she met us down in Austin. We only got to spend a few hours together, but I was delighted that she flew all the way down to visit with me. I tied for first at state, but the tiebreaker placed me third. A lot of people don’t realize spelling bees and UIL spelling are two different things,

One of the proudest achievements in my high school career was the way my team and I performed in the team build portion of the Skills USA competition. The Skills USA competition is a statewide competition in which high school and college students use the skills they learned from a vocational program to build a project in a limited time. My team and I were participating in the construction, team build where a team of four were given the blueprints to a small shed and given two days to complete the project. Before the competition starts the staff call all teams together and make changes to the plans, this is done so the judges can see who can adapt and overcome, and who will fall short. Competing against seventeen other high schools we were the…

“Carly the Cranky Cat’s closet was cluttered with coconuts, crabs, and cauliflower, and Bart the Blue Baboon’s was bestrewn with broken balloons, bubble-gum, and brunch from the beach,” I read aloud to my class. I was in 5th grade and had Mr. Calvaresi. This was the kind of odd creativity he encouraged and allowed us to have when doing our spelling homework. He told us to make our sentences as creative as possible. He definitely helped influence me to be a more creative and expressive writer.…

My freshman year of high school I went out for softball. I had loved softball when I was younger and had always been the star of the team. I wasn’t expecting to come in and be a hot shot, but I also wasn’t expecting to be the bottom man of the totem pole. We had a large team and the coaches knew that to get everyone playing time they would need to have some of us suit up for the first game and save others for a different game that would be easier. I was thrilled when coach said my name in the list of those suiting up for the first game regardless it was for the junior varsity team.…

I was never a sporty kid. For the majority of my childhood, my hobbies have included reading, playing video games, and other generic nerd activities. If you had asked me if I wanted to play a sport, I would have laughed at the prospect, so I surprised even myself when I answered yes to my mother’s inquiry about joining my school’s new flag football team. I worried about it for the weeks leading up to the first practice, but eventually I decided “Why not? It may end up being fun.”…

In ninth grade I started to play Volleyball for my school team. At tryouts it was evident that I was a new student to the game of volleyball but my friend and I left tryouts that day with a resolve to practice every second we had free. We made a pact to work on and practice the techniques taught to us by the coaches and the experienced players. Low and behold I made the junior varsity team. The coaches told me that, with practice I would become a great volleyball player.…

I can still clearly recall the first time I walked through the double doors that led to the spacious choir room. I remember walking in and admiring the many trophies and state championships that sat on the various cabinets along the outskirts of the room. For me, the decision to continue choir was a tough one. I mean afterall, in order to be academically competitive in this day in age, you need to load as many AP courses as possible into your schedule right? It became abundantly clear that I wasn’t the only one that contained this ideology as only 12 students were enrolled in the freshman choir.…
