As we walked home, I recounted my realistic nightmare to Grayson, who listened with attentive ears.
“And that was when I woke up,” I finished off the retelling as we opened the front door to our house. Grayson blinked in surprise, and exclaimed, “That would make an epic story!”
I rolled my eyes, and teased him “Of course that would be your final verdict.” I scuffed upstairs, got into my PJs and dashed back down to grab a snack. T.V time had started and Grayson was already settled on the couch with a bag of chips. Grinning, to Gray’s annoyance, I pounced onto the sofa, and sat next to him, stuffing a cookie into my mouth. The next few hours comprised both laughter and SpongeBob, as I put the appalling events of today behind me.

You…You’re supposed to be dead,” I sputtered, not yet understanding what was happening, “Dad? What’s going on?”
“Sweetheart, what are you-” I interjected with my final realization, “I’m dreaming, aren’t I? This is one of those nightmares I’ve been having.” My parent’s confusion evolved into concern as I spoke, and my mother approached me again.
“Honey, what are you talking about?” She spoke softly, “You’re awake. You’ve been in a coma for the past month.”
My breath caught in my throat as her words swirled through my head. “No. No. No that’s ridiculous. I was just in my room, at home. What… What happened?”
“Sweetheart, you were kidnapped on your way to school about two months ago. You and your brother, you disappeared for weeks”- her voice broke-“We searched everywhere, and when we found you… You were passed out from losing too much blood and your brother… My baby boy… He was dead.” She broke down in tears, and my dad rushed to comfort her.
Grayson was dead. Dead. These words echoed through my head for what seemed like eternity. It was as if my brain had short-circuited and everything was in fast-forward while I sat motionless in the middle of it all. My parents were yelling at me, both wearing petrified expressions, yet all I could hear was the heart monitor whose tone had altered from a steady rhythm to a prolonged, piercing beep, just as my vision faded.
