My friends who had more lenient parents would describe how they would go out alone and it was always a desire of mine to have a sense freedom. Fast-forward to when it was time to go off to college, I decided to live on campus to have a feel of freedom and to become independent since I always felt that a was dependent on my parents. Moving from my home to my dorm was hectic. It was a lot of traveling back and forth because I wanted to make my dorm feel as if I was still at home therefore I brought my whole room to the dorm.
I was petrified when I was finally by myself in a dorm with a stranger who is now a close friend of mine. So I took the initiative, stepped out of my comfort zone and began speaking to the students, I met a lot of amazing individuals from this experience which I will always be grateful for. The sun shined bright above as I roared down the dirt path past fields filled with crops. The wind tore through my hair, whipping it back and forth. I had never experienced such a rush. My dad decided that it was time I road a four-wheeler by myself down the dirt road past his house. It was such a nice day out and a day that I would never forget.…

Growing up near the creek with my family and a old couple living right next to us was a memorable stage in my life, i’ll never forget it. They were never creepy or mysterious, they were just very odd. We all knew they were obviously hiding something in there barn. Me and my siblings always wanted to go over there, because Mr. Martin was always in there, walking from the barn to the house , so we wanted to see the animals. The only problem was they keep in under lock and key and their only window was blacked-out.…

I was no more than eleven the first time I’d taken a drag from a cigarette. I remember it like it was yesterday. My younger cousin Patrick was with me, he and I were playing the with Emerson boys who lived down the street. The nine-year-old twin brothers lived in one of the smallest houses on my block. Somehow, their parents had managed to cram four boys, Mrs. Emerson’s parents and themselves into a cramped three-bedroom ranch style home.…

My childhood, my adolescence and my young adulthood were horrible journeys. I was born in 1987 in a small town of a landlocked country Bhutan, North of China. In 1991, the revolution erupted between Buddhist and Nepalese based on caste, creed and religion. The civil war caused me to leave my motherland at a tender age. Banished to the neighboring country Nepal, I lived in a refugee camp for 17 years lacking citizenship rights and depending on humanitarian aid for survival.…

We waited, standing on the hot summer concrete. We stood by two security guards. They seemed tired and unamused, like they had done this routine multiple times before now. We weren’t really big anyway, so I could understand why they would act that way on front of us. After a few minutes of waiting, a line of cars pulled up.…

Have you ever heard the term home is where the heart is? In the summer after my freshman year, I found this to be true. I encountered experiences that illuminated the value of time spent with family and how this creates a sense of home. My family and a few members of my congregation went on a mission trip to Duluth and Superior. We did a variety of things such as helping people in hunger stricken areas, working and arranging clothes in a woman’s shelter, and spending time with kids at Superior’s Boy’s…

One year ago, on January seventh I learned not to take even some of the worst situations for granted. Sitting in the white minivan, I anxiously waited for my mom who stood on the porch pacing back and forth, while listening to my hungry, screaming little sisters. She received a phone call while we were walking out the door of the oral mouth surgeon, after getting a quote for the total price of the pulling of my sisters wisdom teeth would be. As I watched her, she had kept her back turned towards the wall , and I could feel something way down in the pit of my stomach. I looked back towards her and saw her coming down the stairs to the door to come get in the car, and I could tell she had been crying, even though she had her sunglasses to try and hide it.…

One of the hardest things that I had to do when I was younger was leave my friends, my school, the place that I called home at the time. This memory all started on October 15, 2008, when my parents informed my sister and me that they would be taking jobs in Washington. At the time we were living in Naples, FL. Now this was a big shock for me, I had just found out that I would be moving across the country to a state that I knew nothing about. I would have to make all new friends, be able to fit in with everyone there.…

Making friends for myself, isn’t very easy. I like to think of myself not so much as shy but just hard to get to know. Once I came to Akron it was an entirely new experience, because transitioning from a small town with a graduating class of barely one hundred students who knew each other since pre-k, to a large campus 50 minutes away from home knowing not one person is difficult. So once I started to make friends here, it was a blessing. It made me get my mind off of my family and friends that I left at home.…
