I woke up. It seemed like I was in a different world. I didn’t recognize anything around me. There was furniture I didn’t recognize; flooring I didn’t recognize; windows I didn’t recognize; even my body was unrecognizable. It seemed like “I” was in my 30s. The last thing I remember was that I went to school, completed my homework (at the last minute), and went to sleep.

I got up and looked around. There was a calendar hanging by the doorway. I looked above the days on the calendar and found that the calendar was sold by a company I had memory of. It seemed odd that I would wake up and not even know where I was but still have memory of everything else. Maybe it was all a dream.

But the more I observed my surroundings, the more doubt I had.

“When I had journeyed half of our life’s way, I found myself within a shadowed forest, for I had lost the path that does not stray” (Inferno 3). Actually, this does not describe my death, but comes from a dusty old book I read at one point. I died on April 10th, 2018, on my 21st birthday, in the strange city of Boston. During that fateful night, my friend Erin Valley and I were walking down Commonwealth Avenue, returning home from the seventh bar of the night, reveling in our ability to legally drink.…
