So here it goes, my formal introduction. I had a successful career, with great pay, vacations and sick pay, excellent medical, and stock. Then after 15 years the company was bought out and 150 employees were laid off to offshore our jobs.
Therefore, here I am in the worker’s retraining program. I have a great skill set but unbeknownst to me, my job is in decline and any closely related field I cannot get my foot in the door without my degree. I heard that EDCC offered a Worker’s Retraining Program and decided this was the

I tried to do some college while I was in the Military but due to unforeseen medical condition, which made me physically unable to pursuit it. I ended up retiring from the Marines and moved my remaining family members back to my wonderful hometown that I grew up in. For the first five months I had to hear multiple prospective employers explain to me how wonderful my resume was, how I would be a great asset for their company, unfortunately I didn’t have a degree therefore they couldn’t higher me. I had 24 years’ experience in the Petroleum Fuels Field, led hundreds of workers, held multiple positions within the field, and not even qualified to get…

I work for my dad on our family ranch in Jones Creek, Texas. The work is hard, backbreaking, and tiring. Everyday when I get home I eat the meal that my momma makes for us: there is no arguing whether or not that is what you are having for supper. Every night I get in bed completely wore out from a hard days work, then I wake up to do it all again in the morning. This job is not for everyone, however it is for me.…

Another hot summer in Idaho at another family reunion. I chased after my dad and brother’s cloud of dust; reving my ATV’s (all terrain vehicle) engine I whipped around the land my great great uncle homesteaded on. My confidence grew as did my speed until my wheel caught and spun me right into a log that pierced through the fender and into my leg. It was the first time I ever blacked out. When I came too a few seconds later I was alone; high on the trails of the Sawtooth mountains, blood gushing from my shin.…

I knew he would because I’m his baby girl and I can get anything I want, but I don’t do that because then I would be a spoiled brat and no one wants that.…

I come from a family of seven with me being the fourth out of five kids. I was always the shy kid in school, so I did not stand out in my classes as much as the other kids. The only thing that set me apart from my classmates and siblings was my grades. Getting straight A’s practically my entire life had made me the go-to person for homework help. Throughout middle school and high school, my younger sister would always get sick with migraines.…

The aroma of uncertainty surrounded the paramedics in the helicopter. The twenty-minute ride felt like a lifetime and in that lifetime it had me wondering about how this happened. How could I let this happen? It all started one weekend when I went camping for three days with my best friends, Michael and Carrie. There is nothing greater than helping your grandparents on their large ranch in the middle of Kansas. That was what I was thinking as I hopped on my grandmother Patrice’s horse named Watermelon. My mother told me, my grandparents owned a gigantic ranch, so I instantly wanted to come out and help them and learn how to care for cattle. They had a bunch of cattle on their farm that they have to care for everyday. My mother decided to have me assist them with caring for their animals.…

It was a cold windy day in late November. It was a typical winter day in Rhode Island. The sky was blue, but the air had a chill to it and you could almost smell the snow arriving. My friends and I stood in a circle lightly bouncing trying to use each others body heat to keep ourselves warm. It has always been our tradition to get to an arena at least an hour before a concert starts and wait for the doors to open.…

As all of us might know, being residents of California, an earthquake can be a terrifying thing small or big. Losing assurance from the ground, something we never think about, but always rely heavily on, can really have traumatic affect one’s self.
