My grandmother had to go to radiation everyday, 5 days a week. This was extremely difficult on my family. I couldn't yet drive on my own so I couldn't help take my grandmother to doctor appointment, which made me feel useless to my family and grandmother. However, I did take on a lot more responsibility.

I had to pick up all the slack in my house. I began cooking most dinners, cleaning the house, doing the laundry, and anything else that needed to be done around the house. My mother also began getting physically affected from all the responsibility that she had with

Do you remember when you were a little kid and you had to climb on your counter-top to reach a cabinet? I remember it as if it was yesterday, maybe because it really was. All my life I have been dramatically smaller than all my peers. I have always been ostracized for the fact of my height which, in fact I have no jurisdiction over . I have always lived by the motto “Heart over height” in every aspect of life, and in every endeavor I encounter.…

I work for my dad on our family ranch in Jones Creek, Texas. The work is hard, backbreaking, and tiring. Everyday when I get home I eat the meal that my momma makes for us: there is no arguing whether or not that is what you are having for supper. Every night I get in bed completely wore out from a hard days work, then I wake up to do it all again in the morning. This job is not for everyone, however it is for me.…

It’s true when they say adventure is out there. You just have to be willing to discover the beautiful things in life. In third grade, a boy named Blake - a notorious troublemaker - would chase every girl during class trying to kiss her on the lips. Most of the girls gave in eventually. It was easier to give in than to keep running. When it was my day to be chased, I turned to him, grabbed his glasses off his pudgy face, and stomped on them in front of all the kids on the blacktop. He ran to the principal's office and cried.…

Jackie Robinson once said “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me… all I ask is that you respect me as a human being.” This was my motto as i moved to the USA from Egypt at the age of six years old. Although i was not as old as i am now it was still tough. Thanks to determination and persistence i was able to not only make it in school but understand the language and speak it. It had been a year after my brother was born, i had made a lot of friends in kindergarten, had my dad’s side of the family here, i had finally learned to read and write a little bit of Arabic, and was about to go to first grade.…

Since I’ve to Minnesota, I have gone with my roommate to his church several times. Back home, church was of vital to my family as my great grandfather started and still is the pastor of his own church, to which we all are apart of. So coming up here finding somewhere to go to church was a must and being apart of a community of people who shared a similar ideology as i did was important. I also have a small group of friends who I crochet and knit with from time to time. I enjoy this because my grandmother taught my siblings and I how to crochet as a stress relief activity and it reminds me of patience and focus and how beautiful item can be built out of them.…

I still remember the day when I first realized I hurt someone I soon regretted what I said, me saying harmful words to other people, posting embarrassing photos of other people. One night, I posted a photo and a threatend status online about this one person. The day when I realized I played the wrong game with the wrong person. The date was June 6th, 1976 at 3 am, I was driving and I received a message from my phone. A message that haunts me today, “you will regret what you just posted about me” –Unknown number.…

And this is the room where it happened. It all started 7 years ago on a gloomy summer day in Grand Rapids, MI. At the time, I was 11 years old and quite innocent, seeing I was so young. On June 23, I was walking home from the park while my mom was at work. On my way back on the old, cracked sidewalk, I heard voices from the alley nearby.…
