Another hot summer in Idaho at another family reunion. I chased after my dad and brother’s cloud of dust; reving my ATV’s (all terrain vehicle) engine I whipped around the land my great great uncle homesteaded on. My confidence grew as did my speed until my wheel caught and spun me right into a log that pierced through the fender and into my leg. It was the first time I ever blacked out. When I came too a few seconds later I was alone; high on the trails of the Sawtooth mountains, blood gushing from my shin. I stumbled off my ATV calling for my brother and dad. Their engine was too loud. They didn’t hear me stop. I got back on and tried to get the ATV off the log but it was jammed and would not budge. Sure enough another minute later we saw him at the bottom next to a flipped ATV. My dad went down to help Myles. He had jumped off the ATV when it went over and remained uninjured. The ATV was not as lucky. They managed to flip the ATV over which revealed the crushed handlebars and top grate. They tried to turn it on but it wouldn’t start. I got off my ATV and clambered down the cliffside to try and help. We tried everything we could think of for the next half hour but it still wouldn’t start. My dad told us that we would just have to get out on the tandem ATV and come back for this one. But my brother and I refused to give up My brother found a button hidden under the handle bars and when he pressed it the thing revved up. With renewed hope in our hearts we took the grappling hook attached to the front of the ATV and hooked it to a tree at the edge of the trail. Using the ATVs own engine it pulled itself up the cliff. Once at the top we hooked the grappling hook to the back of the other ATV and hauled it the last five feet back onto the trail. Physically and mentally exhausted we hopped back on and drove our ATV’s back to the

Then we ran into a tall oak tree. That’s when dad told me to run to the house next to us. I was about to run, only to see a branch from the oak tree fly off and swipe dad from his feet making him roll down the side of the house. I jumped and grabbed his hand hanging over the ledge of our house tilting sideways on a half broken oak tree. I tried to pull him up but he was too heavy.…
