I firmly close the slick car door and step onto the curb. From my heavy bag I take out my pack of spearmint gum and take a piece, my favorite. I trudge on and avoid the deep puddles on the sidewalk. The sky is overcast. Just another day in paradise. I can smell the oncoming rain. Its moisture permeates everything. Up the steep hill I climb. I hear sophomoric students and their obnoxious shouts. Why do they stay outside in inclement weather when inside it is warm and dry? I taste the refreshing gum. I walk some more and hear the low engine growl of a car nearby. I can now smell breakfast food wafting from the cafeteria. I go up the old concrete stairs onto the portico. A wall of warmth hits me as I step through the heavy glass door held by a …show more content…
I walk on the glossy linoleum floors. Somebody walks past, they must have used the entire bottle of axe body spray. I can hear the squelching of wet shoes. I readajust my backpack. The buzzing sound of talking can be heard from the open cafeteria. The smell of tantalizing pancakes wafts. I stop by the water fountain and take a drink of startlingly cool water. I walk by the large flight of stairs to my locker. I hear a siren in the distance wailing. Squinting, I look at the lock on my locker and put in the simple combination. 1...2...3… I open up my locker with a loud rattling clang. Heaving my heavy bag, I start unloading it into the cramped locker. I almost drop a fabric covered textbook because of its stretching material. I look at one of my witty chicken locker magnets and grin. I grab my large binders and multitude of thick tome-like textbooks. I clasp on to the metal doorknob of the library. As soon as I enter the smell of old books fills my nose. I drop a light novel into the large pile labeled RETURN. I can hear the squeaky book cart go through the aisles. I spit out my now tasteless gum into the bin. While walking across the bridge I smell the unpleasant smell of unwashed

The floor suspiciously creaked when I set my foot down, and a tortured shiver went up my spine. My heart pounded in my chest and the sound travelled up to my ears. I debated sitting at the only school desk in the room, but it's broken, rusted legs deterred me. I folded my legs under my body, and sunk to the dusty, unkempt ground. The floor itself looked like it had been an eggshell white, but had faded and stained into the color of a goldenrod.…

Legs quit churning, footsteps ceased their resonation, and it even felt as though the club was expunged of its previous occupants; and was, therefore, solely populated by Margaret, and myself. Upon that moment, I was hesitant to move, and to even inhale feeblest of breaths; although, the door only stood a mere four feet away from us at that point. The door, and a burning sensation within the pit of my stomach, both implored me to continue at the pace that I had embarked with. Desperately entreating me to continue, with quiet and consistent footsteps, the door held open its welcoming arms with delight. However, amidst the silence in the air, and the conviction that our escape was imminent, the perils of certainty set…

I work for my dad on our family ranch in Jones Creek, Texas. The work is hard, backbreaking, and tiring. Everyday when I get home I eat the meal that my momma makes for us: there is no arguing whether or not that is what you are having for supper. Every night I get in bed completely wore out from a hard days work, then I wake up to do it all again in the morning. This job is not for everyone, however it is for me.…

Dispassionate “Am I pushing you too hard?” I heard the girl wince behind me as she pushed slightly on my back, with one hand on the bare skin between my shoulder blades and the other on the lower part of my spine, where my leotard dipped downward. My knees were jutting out to either side of me while my spine curved over until my forehead touched the floor. I tried to forget about the dust, sweat and bare feet that my face was now in contact with. “No, you can actually go further.”…

As I open the soft, yellow curtains and walk into my room, the strong scent of sweaty clothes and stale food overwhelm me. There are filthy sports clothes piled up in the corner. Dirty socks, muddy cleats and wrinkled blazers are strewn across the floor. Leftover chips, half-emptied coke cans and empty candy packs lie on top of one of the desks. The smell of everything combined is haunting and terrible.…
