When growing up, just about every child has some grandiose yet profoundly naïve dream for themselves, be it an astronaut, cowboy, the president, or even the regional manager of a gas station. I, of course, was no exception to this rule; much to my mother’s disappointment, my dream was to be a rock star. The idea of being on stage wowing crowds of people thrilled me immensely; however, even as a child, I understood this dream of mine to be incredibly unlikely, which made my moment of playing a shredding bass solo in front of an astonishing crowd of no more than thirty people all the more monumental. This dream remained dormant until 3 friends and I decided to form a band when we were in middle school. Fast-forward to 2015, and we as a band already have a few shows …show more content…
The evening drinking crowd was just getting rowdy, and there I was, standing tall, bright-eyed, and unbelievably nervous. I had practiced every single day in that two-week period, yet the awe and nervousness that we all shared was palpable. Nothing could have prepared me for the bright, colorful lights that drew every sober eye in your direction. Nothing could have prepared me to see some of my local musical idols sitting in the crowd, watching me in wait. After what seemed like an eternity, we finally began playing. The first half of the show was going well, and I grew more and more comfortable with playing on a real stage; however, I could not take my mind off the fact that at the end of this first half, I was to play a long and drawn out bass solo, with none of my band mates playing with me. In no time it all, I realized that my moment had come. I heard my drummer play the first beats to YYZ by Rush, the final song in the first half. I could just feel my heart slamming against the wall of my chest. This was it. And as I played the final few notes and began the first few moments of my solo, time itself seemed to slow.

On May 9, 2015, Garvey’s Advanced Band and Mustang Choir went to the Trills and Thrills Festival at Burbank Middle School. We had to be at school by 7:15 AM since it was our call time, and that was way too early for me since I usually sleep at 12 AM. I was in Advanced Band and I played the clarinet. Of course I was excited to play at the competition, but I was also nervous since we were going to Six Flags afterwards and I had a huge fear of heights.…

In high school, I remember where my biggest dream changed into a reality. I was a member of the Greenville High School Tiger Pride Marching Band. I played the alto saxophone. Unlike my bandmates, I did not know how to read music then. I played by ear, and whatever scale, jazz run, or chromatic I heard, I could play it back just like that.…

“One of the secrets of life is making stepping stones out of stumbling blocks.” –Jack Penn As my thoughts raced and mocked every ounce of confidence that I could have possibly possessed, I impatiently prepared for what was about to come. It was finally my time to be in the limelight—my time to share my God-given talents. I came from a shy and insecure mindset, but being chosen for the soloist position in a new style of worship would change everything for me.…

Therefore, upon graduation this May, I anticipate touring with the nationally renowned Crossman Drum and Bugle Corp. This will broaden my horizons and will enhance my music ability. Since my first formal band program in fifth grade, I have had a propensity for music. I plan to instill this passion in young people. I have auditioned with the band directors at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and secured a spot in their concert, marching, and jazz band.…

This was my first rock and roll concert that I have ever attended. It was an amazing experience to witness live the energy of this genre of music. During the concert, the spontaneity in the artists’ improvisations, musical communications of the artists by their listening to each other’s instruments, the guitarist’s hair shaking and lively performance, the guitarist’s and the bassist’s jumps in the middle of the songs reflecting their musical expression, and the bassist’s impromptu singing in a song made this a unique concert. The singer, bass player, drummer, and electric guitarist were standing in the standard rock and roll stage setup with the singer in the middle, the accompaniment next to her, and the drums behind her. The audience’s added…

With cellophane wrapped untidily around my head and garbed in the utmost ill fitted white spandex clothing, I performed in my first musical. Being on stage somehow translates into being unapologetic and living purely through instinct for me. So, in moments of my delivery of the choreography flawlessly, putting all the other lollipops to shame, a star was born. From a young age, my brown hair and urge to wear plaid button-up shirts with sweatpants made me different from the crowd; I always seemed to find myself alone on the playground. I was the boy no one really wanted to talk to unless it was to get some gum.…

I held each beat in my hands as I drove the band forward. Every uniformed member dashed in time to reach the coordinates. As the harmonic build of anticipation clouded the stadium and the chord reached its climax, every member is entirely focused as I elongated the last four beats into silence. Just after the final chord of this crucial, coruscating performance of imagery and music, my eyes scanned the band in a moment of silent intimacy. We had succeeded.…

It is my time to shine. In the midst of this darkness, I walked over to the old fashioned metal high stools that stood center stage while my fellow actress awaited my arrival. We grab hands, look at each other and the lights rise up on the both of us. The music kicked in. This is what I dreamt of, this is what I worked for, but also what completely scared me.…

Over the course of this past summer I have had the opportunity to attend numerous live shows ranging from the traditional deep southern sounds of bluegrass, to the stylistic hard and raw sounds of rock and roll. Standing apart from all the rest, a new up and coming Indie Pop band, put on quite literally the greatest show I’ve ever seen. At that concert I experienced a feeling of true exhilaration. Nothing else can come close to the feeling right before they took stage, when the lights cut out, leaving everyone in absolute darkness and all you could hear was the manic roar of the awaiting crowd. The energetic opening acts; Cruisr and Joywave, both arising American Indie rock bands, certainly did their job of warming up the crowd for the main…

I force my small, trembling legs to step onto my giant makeshift stage, which is really just a gazebo, but feels like Madison Square Garden to my four year old brain. I watch the piercing eyes of my preschool classmates as my chest rises and I take a huge inhalation; and I begin my shaky, a cappella rendition of “Sk8r Boi” by Avril Lavigne. As I finish the song, my peers applaud and I am greeted with a feeling of pride and accomplishment that I had yet to know in my previous four years of life. My first day of “big kid school” comes quickly and I am handed papers to take home to my parents.…

Music theatre: an art through which to lose oneself and find oneself simultaneously, tell stories that need to be told, cathartically influence people, and give joy to both the performers and audience members. Growing up in an artistic household, full of music, theatre, and dance, I discovered these truths firsthand. I began singing early in life, and dancing around the house, singing songs, reading, and drawing soon consumed the vast majority of my childhood. Early on, I encountered the indescribable sensation of creating music and telling stories. To describe it as boundless joy would be an understatement, and I am thankful because that intangible, tremendous feeling stayed with me, despite the challenges, trials, and tribulations of pursuing…
