The evening drinking crowd was just getting rowdy, and there I was, standing tall, bright-eyed, and unbelievably nervous. I had practiced every single day in that two-week period, yet the awe and nervousness that we all shared was palpable. Nothing could have prepared me for the bright, colorful lights that drew every sober eye in your direction. Nothing could have prepared me to see some of my local musical idols sitting in the crowd, watching me in wait. After what seemed like an eternity, we finally began playing. The first half of the show was going well, and I grew more and more comfortable with playing on a real stage; however, I could not take my mind off the fact that at the end of this first half, I was to play a long and drawn out bass solo, with none of my band mates playing with me. In no time it all, I realized that my moment had come. I heard my drummer play the first beats to YYZ by Rush, the final song in the first half. I could just feel my heart slamming against the wall of my chest. This was it. And as I played the final few notes and began the first few moments of my solo, time itself seemed to slow.
