Personal Narrative: Zinc Tablets

Decent Essays
I once worked the graveyard shift at a casino. Durring my employment there, be it the smoke, the late hours, or the chill of the night, I rutinely caught colds. The Vietamese women I worked with would frequently offer me Zinc tablets. Apparetnly, there was a 1984 study which indicated Zinc worked to minimize colds, but I'm unsure if the results have scientifically been replicated. Anecdotatally, it tastes pretty bad and any results I experienced were minimal at best. Thank you for your contributions to this week's discussion!

As a consequence, I didn't give the first pass through the attention it deserved. This resulted in the need to reread significant portions in support of the quiz, and assignment questions. That was until I found a recipe on how to make some chocolate chip cookies and said, “I can totally do this!” an hour and a half later, (yes ... I struggled) and with some guidance of my mother, a batch of cookies popped out of the oven. I was scared at first to let anybody try them because they looked quite horrid, but as soon as the first daredevil, my older brother, tried this twelve-year-old’s cookies he immediately smiled, shoved the remaining cookie into his mouth, and grabbed another two.…

It was one of those memories sitting in my brain, gathering dust. However, it was also that memory that would come to define an important aspect of me: persistence. When I was in fourth grade, I had volunteered at the 2006 San Francisco Marathon with my mother and brother. All I did was hand cups of water to the people that passed by and stand mesmerized by the sheer number of runners. However, within a few hours, my young self quickly grew bored, and the marathon went from interesting to tedious.…

My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…

Weekly Self S.O.A.P - A. S- Discuss your SUBJECTIVE feelings for this week. This week I was assigned to be in the ICU. To say that I expected to be busy is an understatement. I knew to expect critically ill patients and to see them at their worse with different types of lines and tubes coming out of their bodies. The fragile state in which these patients find themselves was hard for me to see, it was actually a bit overwhelming the first day.…

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an individual child with a desire to gain one Snickers bar, must be prepared to trade no less than three Twix bars. In my household, every bag of fun sized confections was an opportunity for a ridiculous negotiation with a not so ridiculous lesson behind it. When my father loves Snickers just as much as I do, why should he take only one inferior Twix for one Snickers? Critically assessing how much my companion stands to lose versus how much I was willing to pay to get what I want is a skill I have been developing since middle school. Negotiation and debate, human interaction of all kinds have always piqued my interests both academically and recreationally.…

Dietary habits are different from person to person, and from country to country. However, they can all be summed up in a few major categories: carnetarians, vegetarians, and vegans. Of course, this classification can be further broken down into smaller categories, but the essence is that everyone has a different eating habit. Regardless of the diet, recent studies have shown that people should consume more zinc on a daily basis. According to the results, zinc is essential for the human body, although it is only required in small quantities.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…

    1) Briefly describe your exposure to medicine As the daughter of a pediatrician, the medical field has surrounded me my entire life. However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured. My internship at a medical examiner’s office exposed me to the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the medical causes of death. In college, I explored medicine by volunteering in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in St. Paul and participated in a Global Medical Brigades trip to rural Honduras.…

The most surprising thing I discovered about Monica would be letters of recommendations. She feels letters of recommendations are important, especially for the student. I figured that she would not necessarily like writing them because most counselors write them all the time. She feels very comfortable helping students out with that type of thing. There is one question I wish I would have asked, but sadly I could not meet with her in person.…
