Growing up in Federal Way, Washington it was a fairly mixed with all races. I spent all my school years in that city. I can remember playing sports on school teams and AAU, we were treated fairly everywhere and every one could recognize us. But as we got older and were allowed to hang out at night with our friends they, you could sense a difference the way people reacted to our friends. They were African American and had tattoos in High School, they had baggy and/or saggy pants, drove cars that had loud music and bass coming from them.…

I headed into the courtroom of Judge Thomas Marcelain to observe my first courtroom trial. The trial involved a 31-year-old man named, Daniel Bohanna, of Pataskala. Mr. Bohanna decided to represent himself in his trial for fear of misrepresentation. He was charged with rape, kidnapping, and felonious assault. I have seen footage on T.V. from famous trials and of course seen reenactments from Hollywood, but I have never been to one in person until now.…

My vision for america’s youth today is that we focus less on the newest Jordans or the newest iPhone and focus more on issues that affect us because we are the one that inherit this earth. Materialism eats us from the inside out. Our society places significance on what you own—not who you are, it is sad and bitter fact. Many problems may arise and often do when young people embrace this culture of materialism. Lacking the means to acquire the much-valued material things, some individuals develop low self-esteem., especially for those of those of younger age.…

[History tells us that there has been juvenile court since the late 1800’s. In fact, Illinois established the first juvenile court in 1899. In that time the government identified the fact that children were developmentally different than adults, and therefore less capable of making decisions about their behavior. They also recognized that not all children had the parenting that helped to nurture them into adulthood. The states developed juvenile courts in order to help protect children and provide support not offered to adults.…

My interest in law and government began during my freshman year when I decided to become a member of Teen Court. I’ve always had a thirst for knowledge and I signed up for this activity because I viewed it as an opportunity to gain an insight on how the court system worked and learn about the different roles involved. What I did not expect was to gain a passion about defending or prosecuting a defendant and enjoying the responsibility of informing the judge, jury, and audience about the evidence I had gathered. Before this activity, I would have never envision myself wanting to be a lawyer because I was terrified of public speaking. This fear and anxiety I felt when presenting in front of a group has always been a challenge I struggled to conquer.…

I made the decision in high school to become a lawyer, but experiences in college motivated the decision to want to become a prosecutor. Though I did not know much, what I did know was that my sense of right and wrong that infuriated my relatives whenever I called them out for speeding or saying something without having any evidence to back it up, were clear indicators of where I was going to end up. During my time on the College 's Mock Trial Team, I realized exactly what type of lawyer I wanted to be. I joined my school 's Mock Trial Team having absolutely no experience with what mock trial was and only had my confidence with public speaking as a primary skill to rely on. It was not until my first trial that I realized how much I loved the courtroom and while some people could not stand the upwards of three hour trials, I could not have been more enthralled.…

I weighed the benefits of pursuing law against becoming a doctor, my second choice, and I quickly found that science and blood were two subjects that I did not enjoy enough to dedicate my life to them. Additionally, I realized that as a doctor I could not save everyone, but as a lawyer would always have the opportunity to guide someone away from a premature demise. It was not until my senior year of high school that I began to have doubts about becoming a lawyer. Somewhere along the way, my priorities had shifted from helping others to making money. In my hometown, socioeconomic status was the deciding factor of an individual’s worth; as I got older, the judgment became more prevalent.…
