Personal Narrative: Your Never Too Old To Gain A College Degree

Decent Essays
“Your never too old to earn a college degree”, its sounds cliché but not for me since I started school later in my life. Being born and raised in a latin family household with nine brothers and sisters, my parents only focused me to work to help support our family financial needs. Eventually throughout my life ,I got married, had children, therefore I had to work , work and work. I never had time for myself finally as my children became older and left for college, I took some time off of work for a couple of years mostly due to my ill parents but in the meantime, I felt like it was my chance to go back to school and get the education I wanted and a degree since my kids are all grown.

“I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. A dilemma that I faced, and still am facing is simply the decision about what I want to do with my life after my high school career. In my freshman year of high school my goal was simply to get through the year in one piece. I was forced to conform to my new environment and all the strict rules that came along with it. Along with that it was the sudden transition from being the "big dogs" as eighth graders at my middle school to being "fresh-meat" in my first year high school. With so much attention placed on me as a freshman like on the varsity basketball team, where I was constantly forced to prove my worth to the coach and the players, to stepping out of my comfort zone and performing in a mandatory play for the rest of the the school as…

I’ve always been a firm believer that college is what you make out of it. Me being 18 and just starting college I finally see how the world really is, it’s as if a cup of hot water had been thrown in my direction randomly, in other words I wasn’t ready. High school was a cake walk for everyone including myself simply because there wasn’t a huge amount of money over your head after you got your diploma. Just the thought of having a debt makes me cringe and it pushes me to use the time and the opportunity I have much smarter. College is one big investment in yourself and it makes me believe that I can accomplish more than I thought I could just a few months ago.…

A college education is no longer an option or privilege, but it is now considered necessary in order to survive and live a life that is not stricken by poverty. We are practically raised all our lives into believing that one needs college education in order to succeed in and get the most out of life. That statement is not necessarily true because there are people who have never taken a college course and are currently doing better than people who have their bachelor or master’s degrees. There are valid positions for both sides of this debate depending on your viewpoint on whether you think college is a complete waste or not. Many people today question our education system and those people who do question it have the right to do so.…
