Personal Narrative: You Play Like A Girl

Improved Essays
As a girl, the phrases, “you play like a girl” or “you’re a girl, you can’t do that” have always been words that are casually just thrown around, yet it causes flames to come out of my ears. Starting when I was about three, I was a sporty kid always running around. I liked to play soccer with the boys teams, since they were much more physical and would roughly push each other on the hard ground rather complaining when a nail got broken, or hair got pulled. I liked to play baseball rather than softball because I could throw a baseball with much more force than I could ever throw a softball, it was like a speeding semi truck on a highway. I enjoyed playing basketball even though I knew I was, and probably always would be, the shortest one on …show more content…
Being so young, I was so open to trying new things, and not categorizing anything as a “boys sport” or a “girls sport”. As I grew older, I stopped doing what I loved due to the judgements and generalizations of the peers around me. The cute boy in the corner would make fun of me because I would spend my time throwing around a football rather than putting my hair in buns or braids. I consider this to be one of my greatest failures since to this day I wish I was still running around the crisp turf, dripping sweat, and breathing so hard from adrenaline; I wish I was still running down the court and getting that feeling of pure joy after tossing the ball in the air, hearing the swish, and instantaneously hearing your teammates scream your name with huge excitement in their raspy voice that they just lost from cheering so loudly; I truly wish I never began caring what others thought of me since it ended up influencing so much of my life. From this, I have learned to do what I love. I may have stopped playing as many sports as I used to, but I have learned to put my incentives into other things such as schooling and

The earliest I can remember learning that my gender was different and treated differently from someone else’s was probably when I was five or six years old. I always had to wear a dress or an outfit that was always pink. I had to play with dolls and only do things that little girls would normally do and I of course noticed that boys didn’t have to do anything similar to me so I realized that I was being treated differently simply because I was a girl.…

While growing up, sports have always been a big part of my life. At the age of only six years old, my parents first signed me up for coach pitch softball. Little did they know that I was going to fall in love with the game and that they were going to have to spend countless hours at softball fields during the spring each year watching me play. Being so young when I first started playing, winning and losing did not matter at all. As long as I got to throw, hit, and catch the ball, I was happy.…

I was never a sporty kid. For the majority of my childhood, my hobbies have included reading, playing video games, and other generic nerd activities. If you had asked me if I wanted to play a sport, I would have laughed at the prospect, so I surprised even myself when I answered yes to my mother’s inquiry about joining my school’s new flag football team. I worried about it for the weeks leading up to the first practice, but eventually I decided “Why not? It may end up being fun.”…

When I recall certain things I notice that there were times that I was able to play things and improve over time only because of my sex rather than of my skill. Being a guy I have the opportunity to play sports if I wanted to and choose from a variety of sports. There was no problem for me when it came to sports if I did not want to play basketball, I had soccer, tetherball, football, etc. Opportunities for me to get involved were left and right all I had to do as choose what activity I wanted to be a part of. Having that availability gave me a broad spectrum from a variety of sport each with a different set of skill required.…

It will always come down to Timmy Jimmy and Bobby with another player depending on how many are around and myself. I would get matched up with the "weak" player on the opposing team and we will have the ball first because of my presence. The fact that just because I am a girl I get the weakest player isn 't fair. I wanted them to treat me like I wasn 't a girl, treat me like one of them or just as someone that shares the same passion as any other athlete.…
