Beginning at the tender age of four, my family and I united over the joy of what many would consider unlikely--yard selling. Every Saturday we would pile into the car at 7:00AM and travel the city, looking for the classic cluttered set-up on the side of the street. My parents handed my brother and I five dollars each, saying that we could get double back if we invested properly. The strange mystery did not reveal itself until we began negotiating at our local flea market to sell the random knick-knacks that had attracted our young eyes.
My brother and I organized our items as neatly as possible onto the foldable white table. We were practically shaking in excitement as we waited for the customers to pour in. As I stood there with my snow

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

On a beautiful clear morning of February the 19th, my mom picked me up from my class at the University of West Georgia, then we went to Waffle House to have a nice breakfast. We left from Waffle House, proceeding down Maple Street, and turned onto South Street and immediately onto Kenner Street. We then turned onto on the merging lane on South Park Street (US Hwy 27) heading south, we immediately halted to a full stop as vehicles moved from the middle lane into the merging lane in front of us, but at that time there were no vehicles behind us. As we waited to enter traffic, a car suddenly struck us from behind which caused the car to jerk violently forward, causing my mother’s chest to hit the steering wheel, and our heads and bodies to whip forward and then back.…

Something about finding that perfect vintage piece, unlike anything seen in the mass retail stores, gives your style such a personal edge. Most thrift store items were under $6, and half off on Wednesdays. Combined with exclusivity and aesthetic allure, I began to sell my bargain items for up to 500% profit. My favorite pieces included a Tommy Hilfiger jean jacket, an authentic Louis Vuitton handbag, and vintage Levi jeans. Through posting photos of the item styled with others I had for sale, combined with diligently answering questions and fulfilling orders, I became one of the top 15% sellers on Poshmark in less than a year, nation…

How to Survive on the Streets When I lost my job, I was forced to leave my accommodation and became homeless in a matter of minutes. With no family to turn to, I ended up on the streets. Having lost my job due to misunderstanding (I think my job was a massive homophobe), I was unable to pay bills and rent, leading to my eviction from my apartment in 2013. I ended up living on the streets for a lengthy period of time. Drawing was how I passed my time.…

Last summer we went to an estate auction that was way out in the boonies on a farm. I was interested in a leaded glass window that was in a pile of old rusty, nasty beds and chicken things leaning up against an old rotting coop. Long story short, I won the window and as we were standing there the iron bed (there was a big brass bed too) went up on the block. We only have company that requires a bed twice a year when my father comes to visit and we had just bought one for ourselves, so I was very surprised when Loving Husband started bidding on and won the antique iron bed you see below. It included a base board, a head board and two side rails.…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
