I consider Camp Kanata a second home, I worked my first full summer as a camp counselor after junior year. That summer was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life; I learned, laughed, and cried everyday, I also created amazing friendships. Yet when asked about what made my summer so spectacular a few months later, I had little to say, my mind was blank. I cannot remember what happened a week ago, let alone what happened months and years ago. The number of special memories and moments I have forgotten about is unquantifiable.…
Reaching a goal and the work it takes to get there can be a long, trying process. My goal is to make it to Nationals on the Nursery Landscape FFA team. I have competed on the Nursery Landscape team since I was a freshman. As a team of three freshmen and one sophomore, our main goal was to place as high we could as individuals which would help our team score. At State Convention, I wanted to place in the top twenty as an individual.…
I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…
I shall always remember my first year working at Turkey Hill Ranch. I have always possessed an enduring fondness of the lovely church camp over all the years I’ve spent there as a camper, but I never imagined that its unique nature and pleasant atmosphere would impart such invaluable wisdom. This quiet and seemingly insignificant breadth of woods and field, tucked away amongst the encompassing depths of central Missouri, gave me an abundance of clarity on the exceeding importance of humility, service to others, and a bit of hard work in the composition of effective stewardship. Before becoming a part of the Summer staff at Turkey Hill, I was often impressed at the smooth and continuous operation of the camp week after week, being that it was…
A time that I have ever taken a leadership role was when I was a junior staff at Kid’s Clubhouse when I was 14. We had taken the kids to the Museum of Natural Science in Raleigh, NC because the place we were going to go had been closed down. It was organized chaos and the kids were wanting to run around the place but we had to remember that everyone was suppose to be back at the bus by 3:30 pm. The time went by and and my partner lost track of time so I had to stand up and tell her that we had to go so that we would not get yelled at.…
Imagine your beautiful baby girl being born and then finding out she has a birth defect that will affect her quality of life forever. I was born with Bladder Exstrophy, a rare abnormality present at birth in which the bladder and associated structures are improperly formed and occurs in 1 out of 50,000 births. Throughout my childhood I’ve had 14 surgeries to make my life as “normal” as can be. To manage my situation it requires very different techniques just to empty my bladder and to prevent serious infections. Recognizing the need to help support me and others with this anomaly, my parents organized an annual support group camp out.…

The 12th was coming up soon, we talked about it and decided to see if Scott could work as the camp host for 15 hours a week for a free site. After we inquired, we received a knock on the door. One of the RV Resort workers (Natalie) came to ask if I would work in the office, as they already had a replacement for Lee (the previous camp hose who had to leave) but they needed office personnel. After taking the day to think about it (they wanted some until March or January 31st) we decided we will stay until January 31st with the possibility of staying until March, depending on how it goes.…
Oh no I think I see them again. Oops, my bad, let's start at the beginning when it all started. It was July 7, 2013 and I was waking up to go to Sagemont Summer Camp. I put on my bathing suit and drove to Sagemont to load the buses. I got there and found my friend Dillon, a kid a met at camp and he became my best friend, and we picked the last seat in the back.…
Once upon a time, I moved to a farm in the Midwest. I, Nick, lived with many animals on the west side of the pond, but many animals lived on the east side too. The two sides did not like each other very much, so it was not easy to fit in. I currently live in a different farm, but the story about my summer at the Great Farm is a story worth sharing. I did not know many animals when I arrived at the farm.…
Volunteering One day, I walked to my friends house. Her mom had just had a baby boy. Just by looking at her, I could tell she was exhausted. So I offered to babysit the baby, so she wouldn’t have to worry about when her baby's diaper needed to be changed, or when he needed to be fed. She said I didn’t have to, but she knew I had a baby brother.…
We had girl’s night with the females where it brought pop corns and watched movies with them. We something like a field day where we just did activities with them like kick ball, dodge ball, etc. We even had days where we would go up there and just read to them and with them. When we first started going they couldn’t believe it. They didn’t even think that they deserved to have fun.…
The Camping Trip During the summer after my fifth grade school year had ended, I went on one of the worst camping trips in my life. It was sometime during the 2nd week of June. I was looking forward to this trip because all of my family was going. I mean everyone was going, my grandma & grandpa, my aunts & uncles, and my cousins. The year before not many of my family went, so that’s why I was looking forward to this camping trip.…
I enjoyed the children more then I figured I would. They were good all day and made me feel right at home. I loved helping the children and maybe one day helping children will be my…
It was an ordinary day, I woke up, I went to school and I came back home. On this fine Thursday I was down at my pig pen cleaning pens when I heard my phone start ringing, it was an incoming from my mom. I was told to come to the farm down the road so I could pick out my show pig. I went up to the house after I finished cleaning pens and got my keys and took of towards the farm. It was going to take about ten minutes to get to the farm so on the way I thought about what kind of hog I wanted to show and whether or not I wanted a gilt or barrow.…
