Personal Narrative: Working As A Production Assistant

Did you know about Fine Brothers Entertainment before applying? If so, how?

Yes, I did! I’ve been subscribed to Fine Brothers since I saw Elders React to Gangnam Style for the first time, almost three years ago. I’m a huge fan of the channel and it’s part of what inspired me to explore YouTube and online content in college.

Why do you want to work as a Production Assistant?

I love production. I love everything about production. I spent four years as media production student, being exposed to just about every side of the entertainment industry, from development to post.

In all that time I learned that on set production is what I am passionate about. I want to work as a PA because of my passion, because of the knowledge that I have that needs to be put to be good use, and because I want to

I also very practiced in setting up all of the stands, cables, umbrellas, and softboxes that might accompany lighting.

What is your most recent PA experience relevant to this position?

My most recent PA experience that would be relevant to this position is a short I just finished working on called “The Hotel.” It was a parody of workplace mockumentaries being made by UCLA MFA students.

It’s relevant for three reasons. The first would be the time constraints of this shoot. Their assignment was to shoot an entire short, scripted video in under 4 hours. At Fine Bros, I would imagine that since you put out so much content within a five-day span, working within strict time frames is something that happens frequently.

Also, it was a professional shoot, with a real crew, paid actors, work contracts, which is one of the first that I’ve done, and is a little different from most of my undergraduate work. Finally, stylistically it was similar to a lot of the shorts on your channel. It was both a mockumentary and a parody of the genre, and it was shot in real locations as opposed to a

My group consisted of myself, Kausar Uddin, Josh Samuels and Adam Doogan. After I formulated a rough idea of what film I wanted to make, we all pitched what we thought could have improved it from there, conversing about such things as to what extent of a relationship the lead characters have within the narrative. Early on, pre production, we did not distribute roles to each individual because we wanted everyone to share responsibilities; However, towards the end we agreed on roles based on what occurred in production. The idea behind not giving each other roles was to offer different perspectives, a new set of eyes with the desire to improve the final product. In a larger project, switching roles frequently would not work, but because we are…

This semester I worked in the Scene Shop for Production Experience 1 for both Vinegar Tom and Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Because I came on later than the rest of my peers, I caught the tail-end of work for Dead Man’s Cell Phone. I also participated in light hang and strike for Vinegar Tom as part of my Production Experience this semester. In terms of scene shop, it was new for me because I had never spent such a concentrated amount of time in that aspect of production or worked on projects on such a timescale. The only other experience I had with scene shop was what I had learned in the half credit Introduction to Stagecraft course I took at Vassar College, which involved learning how to work with wood and how to design props.…
