Personal Narrative: Work With Apartment Mart

Improved Essays
Two summers ago I worked for a property management company by the name of Apartment Mart. I started in April of 2012. I was reffered to the job by one of the older members in my fraternity. Though I had no experience, I had no other opportunities for work that summer. I took the job because he told me that even though the work was physically strenous and mentally draining, there was a good amount of time to slack off and that it payed well each week. Also if I wanted to continue to live in Bloomington normal for the duration of the summer, it was necessary that I find a job to support myself.
Work with Apartment Mart was challenging. My coworkers and myself were responsible for the maintence of 13 properties around Bloomington Normal. Every weekday started the same, awake at 6, healthy breakfast and a healthy dose of caffine at 615, Out of the door by 7, at work at 7:15. We would arrive at a property and immedeatly get to work. First we would walk the property, picking up any garbage with our pickers and buckets, also, it was our responsibility to put any loose rocks back in any rockbeds that seemed to encapsulate every building. Next some of the team would start trimming and

I would do as little work as i could get away with, and I tried to take the longest amount of time doing the easiest tasks. I would ask for multipe bathroom breaks a day, even when I wouldn’t have to go. The new guys would try to give me advice, but I didn’t consider it constructive, I knew how to do a good job, for some reason, they didn’t believe me. One Monday morning after a month of working for Apartment Mart, I called in sick. I enjoyed my time off so much that I did the same thing the next day. At the end of that second day, I recived a call from the manager informing me that because of my absence they had to find someone to fill in to keep up with the work, and I had been replaced by one of their friends from F&W. My past work experience has been at Sobeys, where I could experience a lot of women’s leadership. I worked from October 2013 to June 2015; I began working there since it opened to until I resigned, because I had to move to Kingston. In our Sobeys, there were more female department managers than male managers; my department manager was female as well. If I gained knowledge of what woman could do by reading about “The Famous Five” before, this time, I gained knowledge by experiencing different female leaderships. I’ve experienced both poor and great leaderships.…

I remember completing my shit as usual, and as I punched out my card I noticed that one employee seemed to be running late and the only cashier on shift at the time seemed to be struggling to deal with the customers. The customer seemed to be arguing with my coworker and angry when he received the bill for gas in which he had used up in his boat rental. My coworker seemed to be trying to calmly tell the customer that he had used that much gas and that he needed to pay for it or she couldn't give him back his license. So before leaving through the back door, I made sure to come out and explain to the customer that that was indeed the policy of the marina and even went out the docs and had a dock hand, one who had actually filled up is rental…

The idea that excites me the most about being a returner is getting to know a new housing staff. The late night chats during Fall training; that first set of rounds where you get to go through and see what everyone came up with for their hall decorations; the first weekend duty where everyone congregates into the office for the night. Getting to know my Lower Quad staff this year came all at once - it wasn’t a slow process like I anticipated it to be. By the fourth night of training I was having conversations with my coworkers that it would otherwise take me years to bring up. While these bonds will remain after the year is over, many of us will graduate, or find ourselves in other roles, meaning that we will have the opportunity to make those…

After coming out of high school I got into college with my mind not being set on a carrier, something common in resent graduates. By that time, my mom was working for a hospital; she thought it would be a good idea if I studied to become a Respiratory Therapist. Not a bad idea if one doesn’t mind dealing with the worst cases in the hospital; it’s a career that has great benefits, and a decent wage. Fast forward three semesters into my college years, and I was still not convinced if I truly wanted that type of career for the rest of my life, so I decided to drop out of college and start my own business. At that time I was working for a construction company that mainly focused on parking-lot maintenance, which I had been working for the last…

As I walked into the small building, that in fact looked very enormous at the time, I began to anticipate every answer I would give to the person who interviewed me, so that to them, I would at least seem prepared. Although I had practiced my interviewing skills that very morning, I felt anxious and worried. Not knowing what to expect, many different scenarios ran through my mind, all of which weren't making my situation any better. Questions after questions were asked, all which seemed impossible for me to answer, and I felt as though I blew the whole thing. After the interview, many days passed by, and I had convinced myself that I did not get job.…

Fundamentally, I already had extensive prior knowledge of arguments and the need to present the best reasoning possible to convince another person that my idea or statement is correct. Having had to deal with legal issues, running my own real estate rental business, as well as being a lower level manager in a parts distribution warehouse, has given me plenty of opportunity to practice arguments, and persuasion. I wish I had attended college before these situations occurred. My biggest weakness is my communication skills. Verbally, written, and body language communication skills were very insufficient.…

I often consider myself to be a “back-up leader.” This might seem like a down and out expression however I find comfort in it. It nice to know that there are backups available, whether it's having backups for programs and projects, extra money for food if you forget yours, or just having a friend to always have your back. Being a “back-up leader” has many benefits to it. I am able to watch and learn from others mistakes, if things aren't working well I am always ready to step in and help, and it allows me to benefit a team by giving the leader or group members what they want.…

Spring of 2015 was the first time that I moved out of my parents’ house with my name on a designated lease agreement. I was finally moving to a reliable and stable living situation for the first time, and in order to do so, I had found employment at the gas station up the street from my apartment. Months went by and I began longing for a different occupation. Working at the gas station was becoming more tedious every day.…

But within two months I was promoted to a manger which means I was in charge of all the other people working on the floor when I was there. This position added more responsibility to my job because I had to assign jobs to the stockers and make sure they were finished in the appropriate time. Now I have been promoted again to head of the frozen department along with being a manger I have all the same tasks of being a manger along with the added job of ordering all the frozen items and running all the back stock that is in the large walk in freezer. When we work the night shift the first thing we do is make sure everything that is on sale is full on the shelf, sometimes I give the job to others or sometimes we all work together it all depends on how much we need to get done that night which completely depends on the day crew. After we finishing filling sale items we will “face” the store this means we go through and pull any items that are pushed back or have been purchased by a customer to the front of the shelf so that all the shelves look nice and neat.…
