Personal Narrative: Work Day Shift Nurses In A Nursing Home

Superior Essays
“Here is your medicine”, the nurse said as she walked into the resident’s room. Working in a nursing home, I hear this phrase all the time. Even as a nursing assistant, I hear it every time a nurse comes in to give a resident medicine while I am trying to give care to him/her. I used to think that a nursing home was a happy place that all elderly people went when they retired; however, as I got older I realized that I was wrong. Elderly people need help because they cannot take proper care of themselves. I have always wanted to work day shift, so when I received the chance to observe one of the day shift nurses I could not resist. It had changed my mind about all the day shift staff dramatically.
As I woke up at six in the morning on a Tuesday,

The nurse walked back and saw that the resident’s knee was open and was bleeding. She walked back to the nurse’s station and called the skin nurse to ask him his opinion on what she should do. He told her to clean it out and put an alevon which is a Band-Aid that they use to put on skin tears to keep it from getting infected. We walked back to the room and cleaned it out really well and put the alevon on. We came back to the nurse’s station so the nurse could do and write the order to keep the alevon on. As we finished it was around two o’clock and the nurse was not doing much so she asked the D.O.N if I could leave. Although I do not work day shift I understand the struggle they go through every morning. Making sure everyone is ready to eat breakfast, getting everyone up by lunch and then putting everyone down for …show more content…
For example, on day shift more people are awake and they use their call lights. They are needier during the day. At night they might pull their lights to use the bathroom or they might want a snack. During the day families are coming in and out of the facility, but at night the only people going out and coming back in are the staff members. During night-shift the only people that call are the doctors and staff members who are calling off for the next morning. During the day the phones never stop ringing. Family members are calling, the doctors are calling, and the staff still calls in to call

Nursing has been around for a very long time. To be successful in any career, you must know the job position, duties and responsibilities. Most (CNA) training programs last about eight weeks. Bedside shift report also allows nurses the opportunity to plan their day, and to schedule tasks based on patient situation. When completing bedside shift report, nurses are increasing their efficiency, by completing part of their assessment during shift report. “While doing shift report, a nurse is able to assess the patient’s orientation, and speech all while gaining the information needed to care for the patient. “Direct observation of the patient by both the off-going and oncoming RTs promotes accountability between shifts and makes it less likely that inaccurate or incomplete information will be passed along.” (Eckbold & Dombroski, 2012,…

As a future register nurse and as a woman I feel that a have a tremendous responsibility to give back to my community. I believe that one of the most forgotten populations in our community is the elderly, and as a society we have so much to learn from them and to thank them for what they did in the past. I strongly believe that if I could make some positive changes I would decide to do them to influence some senior citizens’ lives and to change their isolation for companion and thankfulness. I would advocate for the elderly with our authorities and I would request a budget to build a clinic to provide preventive health care services for them. I would designate a budget to build a nursing home for the elderly that do not have a place to…

Hospitals should reconsider their policy on using twelve-hour shifts over eight-hour shifts. The main reasons hospital facilities introduced twelve-hour shifts was to reduce hand offs, decrease the amount of money they were spending and they thought if they offered the shifts they would have more employee retention. The only statistics they should care about is real and unacceptable risks to patient safety and satisfaction as well as their employees’ health. The research presented in this paper is conclusive in showing that these statistics improve if shifts were to be shortened or if the nurse was given adequate recovery time. Fatigue is silent but deadly, not only to patients but also to nurses.…

I admired the nurse that took care of my aunt up to this day and hold them in high respect. I invested hours in their office whenever I visited my aunt in the moments of her surgery or to pick up her medicines. Few years later, I had been volunteering at a local hospital, this made me fully realize the hard work nurses put in their work line. My overall experience with the nurses that I encountered was positive. In my senior of high school, I took a course on health and human anatomy.…

The ability to have multiple days off is appealing to most nurses, especially nurses with young children. 12-hour nursing shifts can benefit patients as well. Patients often become frustrated and confused when they receive care from different nurses in a single day. 12-hour nursing shifts result in fewer shift changes, reducing the amount of stress and confusion experienced by patients.…
