Personal Narrative: Words Matter

Words Matter

It was a gloomy day in California. A group of teenagers dressed to impress, waited outside a room all wanting the same job; the opportunity to help new students settle into a new home and school.

Aliya had always felt passionate about helping the new immigrants because she knew what it was like to move to a new country and know nothing about it. Aliya studied her competition. It was hard to see as the lights were off, but she could make out another girl and two older looking guys. She knew she shouldn’t be cocky, but she still believed she had this job in the bag. Feeling a little isolated Aliya went to talk to her fellow competition.

“Hi I’m Aliya, what’s your name?” Aliya said sticking her hand out to the boy next to her.

During this weekend, I can say that I experienced all three levels of communication. It is something that at first, I did not realize that I was being that particular way. During the course of my day, then I would realize. For example, the I-It communication level is something that I experience everyday and I’m sure we all do. When I pick up my coffee, when I buy clothes, and when I walk into a store etc.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

I learned that all the prewriting is not the same there are different formats of writing. I haven't learned which essay writing best fits me. I believe that the one that fits me the most is the free writing because I can just write down anything and continue without stopping. I can write to whatever comes to mind and even though it doesn't make any sense I still write it down I feel that most of my best writing comes from free style writing. I can only do my best when I feel that I am able to more work under pressure and that I can relieve a lot of my stress by writing.…

I think a writer's voice is their own style of writing, a perspective, and a tone. Our style is the mechanics of our storytelling. I think over time our natural style will develop and as we read various works, we begin to be influenced by the styles of those we choose to read. We begin to pick up bits and pieces along the way and eventually define our own unique style of writing. Experiences is what will shape our voice.…

As I've gotten older in middle school I can see how much iv changed over the years and how my work has gotten better. At the beginning of the year, I didn't understand the writing techniques. I've always struggled with my writing and organizer and always been behind, but now I understand my topics and what I'm supposed to be writing. One of my greatest strengths is being able to create a story out of anything, I also took it in my hands to make sure all my questions are answered to understand what I'm writing about. Yet, there are also parts I need to improve my grammar and word choice.…

I write from the heart and I don't make use of flowery words or phrases to fill up space. My stories are rounded, cohesive, and targeted at my client’s specific audience. As I detest the use of spinning software, each article is researched and written by me, according to my client’s specifications. As for keywords, I'm more than proficient in their use, while I am also able to add links where the client thinks it necessary.…

There are many steps to follow in order to prepare for a volleyball game and to prepare for a paper. I have to eat healthy, workout, practice, watch film, then practice specific techniques in order to prepare for a game. While writing, I have a set of steps to follow so that I will have an organized and successful paper, such as prewriting, drafting, conferring with friends, editing, proofreading, and finally publishing. Now I am standing in an empty volleyball gym and am finally ready to start the writing process.…

I gained those skills by making time to ask for help when I need because I found out that closed mouths don't get fed and I think that's whats the hardest parts with most students, but when you practice on doing things like that then you will eventually not notice and It will be something that just needs to be done. The writing process for me is always hard because it is a battle with me and myself. If I get get distracted one good time, then that makes it harder for me to focus. I have also gotten better at the habit of being an honest and focused student athlete even though I have an f in English but sometimes we all just need to be sat down and realize what's important because we might be moving to fast.…

Why We Tell Stories Stories have been with us since time began and remain to be a core tradition to not only tell them but create them. They possess a great deal of intimacy which are often captivating to the audience, entertain and educate them by use of well-served themes. In any society, there occurs a dynamic tradition of passing information and narrating life experiences in a creatively tied recital that accounts for the ordeals that took place in the past. Major life changes such as loss, supernatural occurrences, natural calamities and personal changes are often recorded intuitively as narratives.…

Scribbling pencils across a page, clacking keys on a computer, tapping thumbs on a smartphone--the whole world is a community of writers. People write because they have to, and people write because they want to, but I write because it helps me find who I am. In kindergarten, I was an author. At my grandma’s house, I would spend hours cutting, stapling, and writing until I emerged from the scraps with a handmade book.…

The Real Test In elementary school, it never crossed my mind to compare myself to others. I was one of the kids that was considered “gifted,” who got to occasionally go to the back of the classroom and learn separate, more advanced topics. In other words, life was good. I wasn’t an arrogant kid, but I didn’t constantly have thoughts of feeling stupid.…

On the kitchen counter, my mom had left a note informing me that a corn beef sandwich was in the fridge along with a six pack of Drewery’s beer. As I sat at the kitchen table, I opened a beer. From my position, I could see the front door. It had a thick coat of varnish, and I remember the summer that my mother applied varnish to that door. I turned 13 that year, and I was wondering how my parents would react when I brought a girl home to meet them.…
