At the age of 14, I took an interest in wanting to help people. I wanted to be that person that made sure everyone got what they deserved in life. That’s when I knew that I wanted to study law and pursue a career as an attorney. I recently decided that I wanted to become a judge. I chose this field because the criminal justice system is not the way it should be.…
What do you picture when you hear the word “lawyer?” You most likely see people like Michael Clayton, Atticus Finch, Tom Cruise or even Matt Damon. You think of the amazing cases about civil rights. You imagine the money they make from taking down the “big” corporations in court. What I’m trying to say is people who are on the outside of law offices see the mask that is put up by studios and media.…
I have always known that I wanted to serve in the justice system, but my interest in law school truly began in high school with experiences such as my involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters. As a Big Sister, I learned that there are many children in the world that need an advocate to give them a voice within the system. My interest in a legal career was further piqued during my attendance at Sunflower Girls State where I was able to attend a real trial with the District Attorney and participate in mock trials. Experiences such as these both inspired and encouraged me to set my goals towards law school.…
Though I was not able to put all of my attention to school until junior year, I kicked it into high gear as soon as I could. Despite all my hard work, I was unable to find myself a place in the top 10%. This has hurt my appearance to colleges, but I hope that with these explanations of what I had to go through freshman and sophomore year, my position will be slightly more understandable. Engineering honors is the best thing for my future and everything I want to do with my life. Honors will help me grow as a student, so I can be a better employee and will help me grow as a person.…
I was born a woman; probably my father wasn’t so happy about my gender. Perhaps he wanted a boy named after him. I can’t remember my first thought as a baby, but I’m sure I wasn’t able to distinguish between males and females, or the fact that the doctor was a male and the nurse was a female. I just knew I wanted to love and be loved regardless of my race, sex, or religion. My friend Melissa was raped, and it was her fault.…
When I attended Thorton Junior High School, I was real skinny, therefore, I felt like an outsider. I was thirteen years old and wearing a size one, whenever a big gust of wind came, it nearly knocked me down. People often teased me and called me names like Olive Oyle, Wilma, or Skinny Minny. Whenever we had gym, I was scared to show my body because it was so bony and I knew people would laugh, when they laughed, I felt like an outsider.…
Iclesias Phanord Breaking the Norm I’m surrounded by bouncing basketball and expectations. I had not yet found my vocation. However, many people around me had; whether it was basketball, cheerleading, or track - they had found a purpose that drove them. I did not have anything that I was truly passionate about but when I began playing volleyball, I discovered it and I fell in love with the intensity that came when I touched a volleyball.…
Life. The struggle is real. Even though life can be unfair sometimes, the glass can still be “half full!” Everyone deals with the unfairness of life; you just have to choose to be an optimist. Life in itself can be, and is many things: joyful, happy, sad, depressing, abstract, dull… unfair.…
The location I choose to perform my violation of a culture norm was at the cafeteria. I used the cafeteria that is in the Gordon student center. After trying to decide which cultural norm to experiment with, I choose to invade someone else's personal space. The plan I created was going up to someone in the cafeteria, and intentional sitting close to the person to invasion his personal space. Have no communication between us so the interaction would be silence.…
In my experiment I created my own violation of a norm. For the experiment I screamed in a Dillons grocery store. There was only a couple of people near me when I did this. One girl just looked at me weird and then looked away. The guy down the aisle from me started to run.…
Feeling like an outsider is something I do on a daily. Ever since I could remember I had always felt like I didn’t belong. Whether that was because I was taller than most kids my age, or I was always at least two years younger than all of my classmates. I had always felt different, almost as if I was supposed to be born in another time. The need to belong is one of the fundamental needs within all humanity as we all feel the need to "fit in".…
For my minority experience, I decided to attend a church service at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Warsaw, Indiana. The service lasted for about one hour and was attended by many individuals of various ages. When the members of the church first walked into the sanctuary, they walked up to the front and kneeled or bowed to the cross and then walked to their seats and said a prayer that I did not know. Throughout the service, there were a few songs that were sung and the priest spoke for the majority of the time. At the end, the members of the church then took communion and received a blessing and anointment with oil from the priest.…
The Resistance There that man is again. Everyday I go for my morning walk and everyday I see that man. The same tall, skinny, noticeably hungry man, but this time was different.…
The future is never clear, and my own was no exception. Thoughts of what I wanted to do with my life were always followed by uncertainty. During the entirety of my adolescence I always felt overwhelmed by my inability to decide my future, leading to a metastasizing panic in my inabilities to achieve success in any discipline. My transition from childhood fantasies to adult goals was anything but seamless and I often found myself lost, especially in academics.…
In today’s modern society, you can learn quite a bit about someone simply through observation. The manner in which their interactions and behavior are demonstrated can reveal contextual explanations about their experiences and the way they live their lives. Contextual explanation, as a sociological idea, is defined as the environmental factors that can explain or justify an individual’s life experiences. These particular explanations directly support public ideas, which cover the basis of environmental influence in a person’s life, some of which may include where an individual went to college, were they grew up as a child, and what kind of people they surrounded themselves with. Because contextual explanations define the behaviors of everyone,…
