Personal Narrative: Why Not To Rent

to pay for transportation, tuition, and textbooks, but my parents wanted me to pay $300 a month rent while I was living under their roof. I understood paying rent while I was working, but paying rent while I was trying to go to school seemed like an unnecessary burden my parents were placing on me. In order to resolve the dispute, I decided to communicate with my parents. I used a position-based approach. Rather than identifying my main issues, I identified why I needed to live at my parents’ house for free. I argued that it would be unfair to have me pay for schools on top of rent and that I was going to school in order to get a career. I used emotional manipulation since my “opponents” were my parents. Eventually, they agreed to let me stay at home for free, as long as I paid for my own expenses. I agreed to continue paying rent if I am still at home by the time I have graduated from school. …show more content…
In most situations, I will need to evaluate interests and not positions. Getting to Yes says that “interests motivate people” (43). My position was to not pay rent. My interest was saving money while I’m in school. If my parents hadn’t agreed to my positional based approach, I could have offered other solutions. My main goal was to save money, so I could have asked them to pay for my cell phone bill or asked to pay less rent. Getting to Yes also argues that behind every position is a compatible interest. My parents were interested in teaching me responsibility by having me pay rent and they wanted to receive payment to put towards the mortgage of the house. The compatible interest I had was gaining more responsibility, I wanted to go to school so that I could move on from a minim wage

My residential community has had a great impact on me. The community provides an ideal atmosphere to meet a variety of people. Not only does the residential community promote diversity and inclusion, but it has also granted me the unique opportunity of leading in a college atmosphere. After arriving at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I started spending most of my time in the lobby because my room did not have air conditioning. While in the lobby, I met a racially and geographically diverse group of people.…

I used to live on Irving Street, right on the border of Queens and Brooklyn. The Mexicanos and Puertorriqueños called it el barrio— the neighborhood. A place where they could hide from white supremacy and racism while enjoying themselves with their people, and, boy, did they know how to party. Coke, pot, meth, whatever your debauchery required. This was the place to get it.…

Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

ASU Tiara Smith Mr. Galusha Luna English 9th grade 14,April 2016 This Why 12 Percent Of High School Graduates Don’t Go to College There are a number of reasons why students don’t attend college but here’s the reality that many will only begrudgingly admit: there are genuine obstacles—dire circumstances that prevent a student from continuing their education, and then there are excuses; knee-jerk responses that students regurgitate when questioned about their future. While it is easy to extend sympathy for those students with the most uncommon challenges, it is more difficult to identify with the students who allow a flimsy excuse to stand in the way of the golden gate. Below are some common excuses that high school students give and the reasons why they no longer hold water. I can’t afford it:…

I have been forever grateful for the opportunities that I have had as a child to young adult because of them.
