Personal Narrative: Why I Love Poetry

Decent Essays
I liked all the poems that we have read this term. I even had a friend look at the poems that we were reading and she was very happy with the selection that we were given. She remembers most of them from when she went to school and told me that they were amazing poems about our society and the messages in each work were very clear. I really enjoyed Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night, by Dylan Thomas. It reminded me of my grandmother when she was fighting breast cancer. She acted just like this, she was not ready to go and she fought each and every day to make sure she said everything that she needed to say to her family.
The next week we covered Lady Lazarus, by Sylvia Plath and Daystar, by Rita Dove. Both of these poems showed me what can go through the minds of someone on a daily basis. They may look different on the outside, even happy, but there could be a war going off in them. Then we read I, Too, by Langston Hughes and Barbie Doll, by Marge Piercy. These poems really hit home for me, I grew up with a brother that is bi-racial and was constantly judged for the color of his skin and he is one of the best guys that I have ever known. With Barbie Doll, I have witnessed bullying and even have lost people to it. People need to know that words hurt. These poems tell me that

I had to read a few of them a couple times to see what the author was trying to get across, but the way they wrote it was beautiful and empowering. The difference in my experience of reading poetry compared to before this class is being able to understand it. I am now able to read it and just see more than words on a piece of paper, I now see someone’s heart and soul, their feelings, their life. The statements that Billy Collins makes about poetry and literature are that people want instant gratification and do not want to put the effort into trying to understand the work in front of

After reading the poems, I enjoyed reading Carl Sandburg's "Grass" poem. It was clear, to the point and easy to understand. Lots of poems are very in-depth and at some points confusing. This poem was to the point but still had depth to it; I enjoyed the simplicity of the poem. Another poem that caught my eye, like many others, was Sharon Old's "Rite of Passage".…

It is official, I have taken my first poetry class, in a way I wanted to explore my poetic side while also learning new techniques and elements that I can take to the future classes I will teach. Many times, I have heard that poetry is a joke or that it is dead thanks to music, but I strongly disagree. Poem’s are meant to be this lovely little pieces that are fresh, healthy, and unique. This is something I have learned as this semester progressed. Some of my poem have had some blandness due to being cliché or lack of language.…

A lot of the poetry was pretty confusing to me, to be quite honest. The exercises we did in class where each group had to interpret the meaning behind each poem definitely helped me to gain a better understanding. I actually have a couple favorites and some that really stuck out to me. For instance, “The Mother” by Gwendolyn Brooks is about abortions and what the aborting mother will never experience both during and after birth with the fetuses she’s aborted. It’s sad, and quite heartbreaking, but very real.…

Now I could lie and make up stuff that made me like reading and writing but I see no point in that. Honestly I don’t have a lot of memories of reading and writing from when I was a little kid and I can tell you now that football hasn’t helped me at remembering those memories either. With that being said I do remember some memories, some are good and also bad.…

For most students, the moment the bell rings for summer, they never speak to their teachers again. Usually this applies to me as well, but last year, it didn't. Ms. Dirmeyer, my 7th grade Language Arts teacher, still keeps in touch with me, even though she’s not my teacher anymore. She takes interest in my writing, and has done several things to help me improve. Ms. Dirmeyer sends me emails with writing tips, along with worksheets directed towards improving my writing.…

My interpretation of what poetry is most likely the same as what anyone else it is thinking; whatever the poet at the time wants it to be. Poetry is open to anything. It can express anger, happiness, hatred, fear, love, passion, joy and any other form of expressions known to man. Before this assignment I was not big on poetry outside of when it was required to read in school. I decided on the poem “To Change the World Enough” by Alice Walker, mainly because I was able to understand most of what the poem was saying.…

Over the first semester I feel I have been appropriately challenged in the area of writing we have done this year. I learned many new skills, but the most important one involves English and how to write properly. As for the first writing, I really did not understand what was right and what was wrong. Because I never paid close attention to specific rules in how to write. I truly believe it has been hard for me.…

This assignment probably taught me more than any other assignment I've ever done. I feel like most written assignments are challenging you to demonstrate what you know, whereas this one challenged you to apply what you think you know and to take away something new from the outcome. I approached this assignment feeling a little lost. I read the poem and became overwhelmed. I understood nothing.…

To humans, the most essential part to living is communicating. We connect to one another through ways of expression such as music or literature. Poetry as a form of writing is a way to express feelings through rhythm and the use of specific words. In every poem, the author conveys a certain topic or emotion to the reader. The use of language, metaphors, and recurring themes is essential to the poet in sending the right message.…

Therefore, I believe that this poem is effective because of Gwendolyn Brooks’ use of unique frame and structure of the poem, and keeping the poem short and was able to get straight to her point on the topic. The poem is also written using “we”, which gives the feeling that it is the seven young men who are saying this poem, speaking from their knowledge. At the end the young men admit that living this lifestyle will cause them to die…

The poems need to be something you should stand for. This poem is about the racial injustice in Harlem that not many authors address in their literature. His poem is the epitome of the Black Arts Movement because his poem is telling the audience to wake up from their sleep and see what is going on around you. In his poem, he writes in a very aggressive and polemical way, so his point can get across to his readers. Baraka says, “Poems are bullshit unless they are teeth or trees or lemons piled on a step,” (703) this quote shows how he feels about poems.…

I devote myself to any project I start or activity I join, which I find of great value. For example, as a kid I enjoyed to watch cheerleaders at the high school and dreamed to be one. As of now I have been a cheerleader for five years and plan to continue next year.…
