The next week we covered Lady Lazarus, by Sylvia Plath and Daystar, by Rita Dove. Both of these poems showed me what can go through the minds of someone on a daily basis. They may look different on the outside, even happy, but there could be a war going off in them. Then we read I, Too, by Langston Hughes and Barbie Doll, by Marge Piercy. These poems really hit home for me, I grew up with a brother that is bi-racial and was constantly judged for the color of his skin and he is one of the best guys that I have ever known. I had to read a few of them a couple times to see what the author was trying to get across, but the way they wrote it was beautiful and empowering. The difference in my experience of reading poetry compared to before this class is being able to understand it. I am now able to read it and just see more than words on a piece of paper, I now see someone’s heart and soul, their feelings, their life.
