I began riding horses when I was four. My first time riding was at a school outing, and they had pony rides. I loved it! I did not stop there, I have been taking riding lessons. The second horse I rode was a mare named Athena. She was an older mare. She was very patient and friendly. She would look back at me with her large eyes when I made mistakes while riding her. She never seemed to be bothered by my mistakes, she just seemed to want to tell me I was doing it wrong. Her struggles with health problems really inspired me to try harder and to stay positive. As she aged she developed ailments that caused her pain, but she always seemed to have high spirits. Last year Athena moved on. I have to say that was very hard for me. He was not as patient as Athena was, but he was kind enough to tolerate me. When I had to try over and over to learn certain thing he would flick his ears at me as though he was a bit disappointed in me. He was always willing to help me along, he never gave up on me. Not only did he help me learn to handle a horse in all kinds of weather, but he really helped me to learn to move as one with a horse. His strides were very fast and short, I had to retain my deep seat in the saddle and keep my hands gentle with the reigns. He was fun to ride, I truly enjoyed my time with him.
