Personal Narrative: Why I Live In Montana

Improved Essays
I am a Seattle native at heart, but for the past 7 years I have been living in Sidney, MT. Many of my friends and family make fun of me for intentionally choosing to live in the middle of nowhere; but I say to them, "Hey, there's a post office, a grocery store, and the MonDak Heritage Center is pretty great."
Let me tell you why I live in Montana. For starters, it's pretty unbelievable. Yeah it's flat, but have you ever looked out your window and see that beautiful painting of a sunset? I have never scene such beautiful clouds and colors in the sky before, and I can see for miles the vast landscape before me. One of God's most beautiful daily creations. It's not just during the day either, nearly every night I look up (I live out in the country)

Throughout my life I have lived in three cultural distinct regions Lima Peru, White Plains New York and Baltimore Maryland. For the first two years of my life I lived in Lima, Peru and even though I never culturally adapted myself into the culture I would often visit for months and immerse myself into the culture. I can say with confidence that if I grew up in that culture I would not my be the same person I am today because of the fact that they are a collectivistic country and that would change my outlook on myself and the community around me. At around my second birthday my family and I decided to move to the United States in search of a better quality of life. With the windows down, the crisp, cool summer air permeated throughout my body, acquiring every hair to stand at attention. Buffalo surrounded and granged lazily through the corn fields that shot high to the sky, as if every row was assembled soldiers getting ready to march. South Dakota is known for open fields with a consumed, laid back lifestyle with not much ever going on. Going into the trip knowing this, I was not in the least bit excited. It was when I absorbed the laid back atmosphere and appreciated every single bit of their way of life.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

Sitting on my porch I open my weekly copy of the Minnesota Daily. “Three Year Anniversary of West Egg Mogul’s Death”, it reads to me. I let my paper fall to my lap and I figure that perhaps that it is why the day resonates such deep feelings of woe. Shakily I decide to continue reading the article. “...shot on an afternoon in his lavish backyard...September 1922...a murder-suicide...”.…

Living just outside of a city allows you to visit the city when you want but still live in a community setting. Growing up in a family oriented community was really great as it allowed me to make many friends and get to grow up with a majority of them throughout my entire public school experience. Being able to go outside on any given summer day and play with all my neighbors, gives a sense of belonging. Being in a new place allows for a lot of exploring to occur, leading you to learn new things you never would not have known unless you went away from your house. If you return to your hometown you wouldn't get to experience everything the world has to offer.…

I’ve lived my entire life in Indiana, as have my parents. My mom and dad were raised close to Monroe and went to Adams Central, where they met and fell in love. They ended up moving north to Fort Wayne where they had my sister and I. We began our schooling in FWCS, but we moved farther north to the tiny town of Huntertown later, which led to my sister and I switching to NACS for my high schooling and her middle and high schooling. Due to all of the events that have happened here in Indiana throughout my life, and due to most of my immediate family living in the area, I have a desire to continue living and working here.…
