Personal Narrative: Why I Join The Military

Improved Essays
To this day I still could not explain exactly why I joined the military. I know I wanted a break from school and I wanted to travel. Maybe it was the speech or video from the recruiter, or I was possibly just drawn to the adventure. Whatever the case, it quickly became a way of life for me. All in all I was a pretty dutiful child. I was respectful to my parents and we got along great. I had no issues with structure or authority and I enjoy challenges. I took to basic training and the military like a fish to water. I attended one station unit training as an unassigned Infantryman at Fort Benning, Georgia. The only difficulty I had in basic training was being unable to contact my family. I have such a tight bond with all of them that …show more content…
was a massive and awesome culture shock for a poor little country boy and beach bum, of that there was no doubt. Orlando was a close city that I often ventured into, but it cannot begin to compare to the diversity of culture, architecture, and history of D.C. It was a bit much to take in at first, but now it is one of my favorite cities in the world. One of my favorite aspects is that as amazing as the city itself is, just a short drive away is the Shenandoah Mountains and river. I have hiked, paddled, fished, and hunted that area enough to create memories that will be unsurpassed. While many of my coworkers were spending their weekends partying in D.C. (I did my share of that too!), I spent the vast majority in some outdoor undertaking. As much as I loved the woods in Florida, the Eastern Mountains were quickly becoming my favorite. The 3D United States Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) is a unit unlike any other in the military. I will carry the levels of respect and tradition that I learned there with me for the rest of my life. Some of my leaders in those early years are still some of the most influential. The single best NCO that I have ever had the pleasure of working for was my platoon sergeant there: SFC Gary Hardy. He epitomized standards and his ability to take care of soldiers by whatever means necessary never ceased to amaze me. At this point in my life I was just trying to learn how to be a good soldier and infantryman, my path was

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

Moving to Orlando from Miami was a huge culture shock to me. Being from the city where people rarely sleep and restaurants/convenience stores are open 24/7 I had a bit of difficulty understanding why the Walgreens around the corner was closing at 12:00 a.m. As I adjusted to what I thought was a drastic change Orlando decided that it wanted to teach me a bit about nature. My time here has pushed me out of my shell and made me a bit more outdoorsy.…

The person I am today is someone that has had a great deal of life experience in the short amount of time that I’ve been here. I enlisted into the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and turned 18 the day I arrived to boot camp. I quickly had to learn what it meant to be responsible for those around me to include their welfare, their lives, and their families. I also developed strong leadership and management skills to accompany those skills in which are needed to be a successful Career Marine. I was meritoriously promoted twice to the ranks of Corporal (E-4) and Sergeant (E-5) for demonstrating those skills in an exemplary way.…

This training has shaped me into a new man. The U.S. Marine Corps training is worse than you could ever imagine. They take you in, and they break you down, turning you into the man they want and need you to be. They're hard on us, harder than mom and dad ever were. I thought it would be easier than this, but boy oh boy was I wrong.…

I have experienced many stressful situations recently my organization, however none have compared to stress I experiences leading up to my deployment to Iraq. When I joined the Oregon National Guard, I was told to never go to the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (41 IBCT), made up of two Infantry Battalions, a Calvary Battalion, a Field Artillery Battalion, Support Battalion and the Headquarters. I was also told that I should especially never want to work in 2nd Battalion of the 162nd Infantry (2-162 IN BN), which was the strongest of the two Infantry elements in the brigade. After working in the state Joint Force Headquarters for eight years, because no other person in my career field would take the position, I was asked to take one for the team, and join 2-162 IN BN, as their Senior Human Resources Noncommissioned Officer. Two years leading up to the deployment I was continually tested, and these experience have ultimately made me a stronger leader.…

The bus doors opened, and a Drill Sergeant came in yelling all kinds of instructions.…

The army is important to me it gives me a sense of family and make me feel like in a part of the team. I don’t mind the pay in the army it gives me a sense of independence and makes me feel like I can spend on what I want and what I need to use to get through until the next check. The army has also has it good and bad experiences like deployment. Deployment can be only on how the person can make it like for example myself I made it hard on myself and the people I worked with because of how I lied and hindered the mission when we were being replaced. The other side was it was a good experience to see how life was in deployed environment like Afghanistan, experience some places on the road to and from Afghanistan like the food, people and the views.…
