Personal Narrative: Why I Had To Enlist In The Military

Decent Essays
On the fateful and infamous day of April 6th, 1917, our country, the United States, had entered the Great War. Immediately, I had thought to myself that I had to enlist in the army in order to serve and protect my country in the most honorable way possible. After enlisting for the army at my local recruitment station in my home town of Lynchtown, New York, I was sent off to complete my time at boot camp. I was extremely nervous as I was leaving to go off to bootcamp, but I knew deep down in my heart that it was the right thing to do for my loved ones and for my country.

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

Now that we knew what the colonists were planning William compelled the soldier to forget everything from the last three minutes and sent him off with a bucket full of water. As we watched the soldier walk away from us William pulled his pocket watch out of his coat pocket to see what time it was. The Sun would creep over the horizon in about an hour and a half so I was forced to return to Boston where I found Jeffrey standing outside a lodging house waiting for me. Jeffrey lead me to the room I would be staying in which was in between his and William's. Jeffrey unlocked by door with the brass key that the owner of the lodging house had given to him, and then he placed the key in my right hand.…

From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

My time at Valley Forge was over, I had been fighting for general George Washington since the summer of 1775 and the victory on April 13 looked so far away because it was only late December, and it was seeming as if a turning point was unlikely. Do I stay and be loyal to my brothers or do I leave and never look back. I had to make my choice very soon, I could have left and the pain of seeing my brothers die , or I could stay and fight for my freedom such as many men had already done. The decision I made was to stay and fight for my country because many men had gotten sick, and I was a faithful servant to my country and I wanted to do what I came to the new world to do which was achieved my freedom .…

The person I am today is someone that has had a great deal of life experience in the short amount of time that I’ve been here. I enlisted into the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and turned 18 the day I arrived to boot camp. I quickly had to learn what it meant to be responsible for those around me to include their welfare, their lives, and their families. I also developed strong leadership and management skills to accompany those skills in which are needed to be a successful Career Marine. I was meritoriously promoted twice to the ranks of Corporal (E-4) and Sergeant (E-5) for demonstrating those skills in an exemplary way.…

Shortly after I arrived and the Computer Science advisors office and checking in at the front desk, Mrs. Janson came out and greeted me. After brief introductions, she led me back to her cube. On her desk she had two copies of the Computer Science Academic Map printed out and my MTSU course and grade history on her computer. She was well prepared. I emailed her a few days prior to the appointment and briefly gave her the reason why I made the appointment and what I would want to discuss.…

When I began working for the Veteran’s Administration as a personal care attendant for veterans that are wheelchair bound I had no idea how profoundly one veteran would affect me. This veteran, whom I will refer to as D-man, would become part of my life for 3 years. This is the first experience that I would have with a totally dependent quadriplegic. Even though I have worked as a medical assistant for many years, this was the first time that I would get to experience up close and personal, the day-in and day-out challenges facing paraplegics and quadriplegics, not only for D-man but also his mother who is his full-time caregiver.…

Throughout the last few years I have had many experiences that have shaped me into someone and provided me with many traits that could allow me to become a great Marine. Yet, the three that stand out the most would be that I always persevere to get the job done, I always make sure I do what is right for my peers and not just for me, and I make sure that I help others to achieve the tasks at hand in the easiest way possible. First, I’d like to talk more about how I persevere to accomplish the tasks I am faced with that make me a great problem solver for the Marine Corps. I do this by pushing myself past my limits and past my breaking points and in doing so I make it farther than I normally thought wouldn’t be possible. It is the mindset I use both in the classroom and in athletics because when…

If I had to describe myself with just one aspect about my life it would be when I decided to join the military. I’m sharing this aspect of my life because it is unique to me and not many other people have the military as part of their lives. Less than one-half of 1% of the U.S. population is serving in the military right now. Joining the Army was one of the most life changing experiences I’ve had so far in my life. In my time since joining I have learned a lot and met many people from all walks of life in the military.…

Upon learning that I was ineligible to enlist in the United States Army because I do not meet the “Standards of Medical Fitness”, I was devastated. From the time that my best friend informed me that she was joining, I wanted to enlist. I took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery in my senior year of high school and scored high enough to qualify for some of the most advanced positions that the Armed Forces had to offer, including those in the skilled technical field. In fact, the scores that I earned in the Verbal, Math, Spatial and Science and Technical domains were some of the highest earned in my school. Aside from these scores, I also met the moral standards for military enlistment.…
