Personal Narrative: Why I Give Back To The Community

Improved Essays
I have always believed that happiness is not about what what you have; it is what you can give. Keeping this in mind every day, I strive to volunteer whenever the opportunity arises. By being active in the community, one can learn the importance of love, friendship, and gratefulness. Throughout my life, I have been a part of many organizations that have presented the opportunity to give back. Through volunteering, I have had the chance to impact to countless lives in the community. I believe that not only did I impact those people, but those people sculpted me into who I have become.
On one hand, I have had countless opportunities in life to take charge and help others, but on the other hand, the most memorable and rewarding experience was when we went Christmas shopping for a family in need. I was fortunate enough to have been a part of the Extreme Dance Angels, which is a charity group at our local dance studio. In this group, we enjoyed being able to do community service at least once a month. Every year around Christmas time, we would find a family in the community that was in need and we would buy them all presents. The last year that I was a part of this group, though, was a

Those kids being a part of the same thing that we were in made the experience really hit home. Being able to buy gifts for girls who were my friends from the studio was one of the most rewarding things for me to do. After we shopped for the gifts, we wrapped them and delivered them the next day. When we were able to watch them open their presents, everyone in the room could feel the love, friendship, and gratefulness. Without even saying anything, we felt the impact that we had on the family that was so grateful. I know that the effect that one small act had on that family is something that will last a lifetime for them, and for

At a young age, I was taught to do things for the greater good, my family has always given back whether it is donating food and clothes or adopting a family for Christmas. Growing up I have received assistance because at times my mother and I needed help so I personally know how much of an impact a small act of kindness can have and that is why I decided to join the Bakersfield Police Explorer program, which is community service based volunteer work. Getting into this program required various steps such as entrance testing, background check, and an interview. I wanted to be apart of this program as a way to test the waters of a career in law enforcement, helping out in the community, and to develop as a person.…

I have helped many people so far in my life, because I always try my hardest to do a good turn daily, as the boy scout slogan says. In boy scouts, I never stop helping the other boys in the troop feel welcomed to boy scouts. Through my service projects, I have learned helping others will have positive effects on you. One example of this was a project I did called the YES Program. I was part of this project last year, and it is by far the best project I have ever done.…

The hardest thing in life is to humble yourself and to realize that the world doesn’t revolve around you. Although most people in the world believe the purpose in their life is to eat, sleep, breathe, and enjoy their life, they are wrong. The purpose of life is simply to leave the world a better place. I was always taught do a good turn daily through boy scouts, but what I have learned over the years is that you should help when ever you can, not only when it is convenient to you. Through my efforts in helping the community I have showed leadership qualities and my character in several ways.…

Raised in a Buddhist household, my parents have instilled in me the core value of putting the concerns of others before mine. With this, I have felt that it has always been my responsibility to take care of others. Through primary school and middle school, I quickly took the role of being an outlet for my friends, classmates, and teachers whenever they needed help or someone to talk to; listening to their problems, staying after school to help my teachers for any minor help that they needed in the classrooms, and having an overall open mind to any situation. My passion to help others continued on to high school, where I was introduced to volunteering opportunities in my neighboring communities. My first experience in helping the greater community…

I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. When I was in preschool, I had the opportunity to be a part of WACO shopping. Woodfield Area Children’s Organization (WACO) is a volunteer-nonprofit organization and each year around Christmas time, they travel to local Walmarts and host shopping events for preschoolers in low-income areas and provide each child with eighty dollars to spend. Two teenagers were assigned to push me around in the shopping cart while looking for the objects my family filled out in the Christmas list. I remember this so clearly because it was such an exhilarating event for me. I remember the teenagers being so helpful and making this shopping trip joyful for me as well as for themselves.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
