In the spring of 2015, Katie Dickerson, an 11th grade English teacher at Olney Charter High School, published an article on Penn GSE Perspectives on Urban Education, titled "Reimagining Reading: Creating a Classroom Culture that Embraces Independent Choice Reading". The article discusses the importance of reading and strategies she used to better engage her students with reading more on their own and in class. When I was a child I always though about business. I wanted to know how things worked, how money worked. I started watching my grandfather write his invoices, deposit checks, talk to people as if he knew them but they had just met. My talent is creating, and my form of creating is writing. Writing is a thing I've been doing since I was in the seventh grade. I started writing then because of a troublesome past, both my mother and my father had left my two other siblings and I all alone, leaving us with our uncle. It was very hard for me to adjust, I was fatigued and emotionally hurt, I turned to writing. My love for writing grew into a bigger part of my life when I kept dream journals.…

Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

Why You Should Read To Your Children I have a four year old son, and I read to him every single night. I believe that reading to him encourages his imagination, literary skills and helps us to build a bond. When I read to my son I can the little wheels in his head turning. He asks questions, and tells me what about the story that he thinks is interesting and what he would change. There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

My experience with reading and writing start with my teacher from elementary all the way up to my teachers in high School, Ripley, Tennessee school district, and University of Memphis.
