Have you ever done something you knew was wrong, but decided to do it anyway? Sometimes people make bad decisions, but that’s okay because sometimes you learn something from it. Someone once said, “What you learn today, for no reason at all, will help you discover all the wonderful secrets of tomorrow.” (Norton Juster’s The Phantom Tollbooth) You may not mean for something to go wrong, but some pretty important life lessons can come from it if it does. Halloween night of my freshman year, something like that happened to me. The first thing I learned from this mistake was to never lie to your parents. No matter how bad you think the situation might be, never lie because telling the truth will help you in the long run. Halloween night, I decided to let my friend drive my dad’s truck around the block-- with no driver’s licence-- just for the fun of it. However, while reversing it back into the driveway, she hit the gas and ran right into my garage. Later that night, upon returning home, my parents discovered the damage. Once the police arrived, I tried to tell them the same story I had told my parents earlier. After realizing that nothing good would come from lying to them-- and being scared senseless-- I decided to tell them the truth.
