Personal Narrative: White Privilege

While it is uncomfortable to acknowledge that some of us have an unearned advantage in life thanks to things that we have no control over; such as gender, race, skin color, sexual orientation, accent and even wealth, it is important to discuss to better ourselves. As much as we, as individuals can continue to acknowledge and recognize our privilege it is practically impossible to discard or refrain from benefiting from the advantageous perks of the privileges. 0However, as we are able to see this invisible advantage many deny we can use our privilege to help and speak out and against the societal constructs. The first time my mom asked me to go to my brother’s conferences in her place I was confused, a tad flattered. My little brother and I have a hefty age gap, and I get more attention than she does at conferences. The reason my mother would rather me attend my brothers conferences is because when she has gone before she has noticed that she does not get chatted with nicely, and nobody asks her if she has any questions. I was born in Mexico, brought to America before I was able to speak and thankfully learned both languages and cultures to my advantage. I consider whiteness to be how likely you are to be treated like a worthy human being. Whiteness is more about color than the European’s decent which is why some people like me are able to “pass” as white, or to be perceived as such. I do not think anyone who is mistakenly viewed as white is trying to fool anyone, you are simply trying really hard not to get people to think the stereotypical things they would usually if the privilege was not available to you. The basis of it is, that anyone that isn’t white, has to deserve their right to be in here. If you are already white, you have already earned that. It would not be fair to assume that all whites have led a care-free peachy life. White folks have a fair share within the poor community. However it is a lot easier to hide your poor clothes than your poor-looking ethnicity. White privilege simply means that a lighter skin individual regardless of their wealth, social status, criminal record or gender, will generally have more opportunities that are more readily available such as friendships, jobs, and education that someone of color may have to work harder
