Personal Narrative: Which One Of These Is Basketball?

December 6, 2016 is a day that I’ll not forget anytime soon. I have never felt such a genuine energy and calmness at the same time. But the story really began four years before that in an airplane. I was nine years old on my way to America, and I was looking at a page of American sports. I held the page up to my parents, and I asked the question,”Which one of these is basketball?” because, in Ethiopia, I had never even seen a basketball. I remember the first time I tried shooting hoops at a church gym. I couldn't even get the ball up to the hoop. But I quickly grew to love the sport that has become like second nature to me. In fact, my parents like to tell stories of the time when I would stay outside after school in the winter shooting until my hands would go numb, and I couldn't feel them anymore.
Skip ahead a few years to seventh grade. I was really excited to play for the respectable Coach Steinbeck. I knew as a team, if we put in hard work, we would have a decent year. In sixth grade basketball, the only people who watched us in our basketball games were our parents, but in seventh grade, it was a different story. Due to a huge fundraiser going on, the gym was especially packed that night. Strangely, I was not very nervous. The first time my teammate Trevor passed me the ball, I shot a three pointer which was nothing but net… swish. The next play, I rebounded the ball and had a fast break which I shot a three pointer and made it. Seeing the ball go through the net at the start of the game two times in a row, gives you a boost mentally which helps your confidence level go up. After that, it felt like I couldn't miss, but in fact I did. I missed three out of the eleven three point shots that I attempted. In addition to those twenty four points, I also made three two pointers for a total of thirty
