“Crow Hill” The line from this poem of “When it is not wind it is rain” reminded me of every day in Florida. The weather here is so bipolar. One second it can be a sky full of direct sunshine and then the next second it is pouring down rain with a heavy overcast and booming thunder. Most of the time I am inside when this happens but a few times I have been caught outside. Once when this happened recently, my whole family and I were at Poe Springs for my seventeenth birthday on a Sunday in August. It was around noon and was piping hot, so we all want for an initial swim. After an hour or two, we were all hungry so we began to unpack everything we brought for a picnic lunch. "Los Angeles Notebook" Reflection Essay On October 25, 2003, the cedar fire (cause of the Santa Ana winds) spread over 30 miles in less than 17 hours burning 5,000 acres per hour. By the time, it was over it consumed 418 miles, 2,232 homes and killed 14 people including a firefighter. It's true that things are only temporary, but the effects of the Santa Ana winds will always affect the people and the environment in such a negative and perturbable way, that along with living in the Los Angeles area as a resident you agree in accepting the consequence of the winds. The expectation of this essay is to explain how Didion's use of literary devices like the selection of detail, syntax, and imagery aid in portraying her view of the Santa Ana winds.…

Introduction: In “The Way to Rainy Mountain” N. Scott Momaday discusses his personal as well as cultural background, as he takes a trip to visit Rainy Mountain after his grandmother has passed away. Momaday’s grandmother, Aho, was one of the last living members of the Kiowa tribe to recall the way of life that the Kiowa lived. Therefore, as Momaday roams around Rainy Mountain he must rely on all the stories his grandmother told him in order to keep the Kiowa history alive. One story told how the tribe came to be through a hollow log, meanwhile another told how the tribe died out because of the lack of buffalo.…

Ray Bradbury brings us back to a time when we all were full of creative potential and explores how summer was an important aspect of childhood. In Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine, there is a significant assortment of literary terms used to emphasize an overall magical and mysterious atmosphere. Bradbury commences the passage with many rhetorical devices to characterize the beginnings of summer and describe how this day is so important to a young child, bright with creative vision. The author personifies the town in the morning in a state of “ease in bed” to show how the town is quite desolate at the crack of dawn, free of commotion. The wind is also given humanly characteristics with it having a “proper touch” to show that it was gentle and relaxed.…

“It’s All Greek to Me” In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein alludes to the story of Prometheus as they are both creators that go against God, that only lead to their own destruction. In the story of the wise Prometheus, he was the creator of mankind and taught them art. In Frankenstein, Victor was the creator of a monster when it says on page 51, “Nor could I consider the magnitude and complexity of my plan as any argument of its impracticality. It was with these feelings that I began the creation of a human being.” When fire was taken away from the humans Prometheus made, Prometheus went against Zeus to bring the fire back to mankind.…

I carried my bags to the front door so that they were very well visible. I had two totes, one velvet textured and green like fresh grass; and the other bright red and made of cloth. They weren't very big totes, but I managed to pack what I needed. I waited on the rest of my family for about half an hour. The excitement was building up inside, I was kinda getting flustered with my family for rushing me and then taking their precious time.…

Revised Essay Matias Miranda 10/17/26 For many people, different environments make them feel certain ways. In the essay Once More to the Lake by E.B White the lake holds a special place in the narrator’s heart because he spent summers there with his father. Nostalgia arises as the narrator and his son perform the same tasks the narrator did with his father: fishing in the lake, seeing a dragonfly, and talking with waitresses. I decided to write my myth on the creation of rain. While it may be simple and a basic concept, those were exactly the types of topics that the Native Americans tried to explain with their myths. As well, my myth incorporates all of the criteria that one must meet. By definition, a creation (or origin) myth is, “the accounts of the ways in which these supernatural agents formed the Earth and peopled it” (Carneiro). While in my myth the Earth already exists, the purpose of it is to explain how precipitation, particularly rain, came to be.…

Emily Dickinson’s poem, “The Sky is low--the Clouds are mean” is a lyrical poem that depicts nature through a non-traditional perspective. While nature in poetry is often portrayed as being beautiful, peaceful, and essentially flawless, in this poem Dickinson intends for the audience to view nature from a different perspective. The entirety of the poem follows with a sad, dull tone while describing nature on a cold, windy, and cloudy day. Dickinson is careful to emulate aspects of a cloudy day to the facets of human life including snowflakes, the wind, and Mother Nature herself. The personification utilized in Emily Dickinson’s…
