Now, however, I was shy, timid, and scared to make new friends. At home, I pretended to be happy at home to fool my parents, but on the inside I was very sad and depressed. Since I was not your “typical girl” and wore “boy-ish” clothes, none of the girls wanted to talk to me. They thought that I was weird and did not want to be associated with the “weird girl.” When I tried to make friends, they would try their very best not to include me into the conversation.…

Did they even know how it felt being the victim? Instead of fighting back and getting violent with these girls, I told my counselor exactly what was going on immediately and just reminded myself to smile and pray for them each and every day. As the school year continued, I got involved with school clubs to take my mind off of that situation. Later that year those same girls had come to me and apologized and wanted to be my friend again. God truly worked in mysterious and magnificent ways that year!…

    1. How will you fit The Prospect into your busy high school schedule? When will you do your assignments, and how will you complete your TP work on a particularly busy week? I'd like to say that I'm naturally adaptive to time-crunch situations. In junior year, I took on two internships that both had scheduled meetings, work agendas, and time-consuming projects.…

The transition from High School can often times be very frustrating for students. L. Lennie Irvin opened my eyes to one of the bad habits I picked up on in High school. The habit of straying from the topic or theme could cause me to fail not only papers in English but my other courses as well. I personally had a hard time with English my first semester of college. In High school I was always at the top of my class and my teachers would tell me how great of a writer I was.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

For most students, the transition from middle school to high school is the evolution from childhood to adulthood. In my case, my middle school graduation was a quick transition for another reason. The first few months of my freshman year had my parents rushing my grandfather in and out of the hospital because of his failing heart. By this point my grandfather had battled off colon cancer, 3 heart attacks, and 2 open heart surgeries. At age 74 he was not a candidate for a heart transplant but he was able to get a defibrillator.…

I was walking around with my so called “friend” when they came. I say my so called “friend” because she honestly wasn’t. None of the girls at my old school were my actual friends. Either I just didn’t really talk to them because we had nothing in common, or all they did was spread rumors about each other. The only reason I talked to them was because I didn’t want to seem mean, plus they were the only girls I knew.…

As I went to my first day of school in a new city I was nervous, I didn't know if I was going to make any new friends, if I was going to fit in. The first day began and I immediately met Randy and Byanca, little did I know at the time that they would be my friends for all of my school career. Time went by and so did the grade levels, I would always struggle with one subject and thrive in another. During my elementary and middle school years I would struggle in language arts and history, but I would thrive in mathematics mainly because I love numbers.…

I did not realize then that those children were not better than me, but rather were not taught to be kind or maybe took their home life frustrations out on me. My mother would often tell me that once I got to middle school things would be different, because I would have a larger array of children to hang with and would not be limited to having to be in a group of mean girls who treated me inferior. My mother also told me that those girls were no better than me and would lift me up and remind me that I was worth something.…

Short shorts. Short shorts as far as the eye can see. This is what I saw all over ETSU’s beautiful campus as I went one day without my cell phone. Initially, I thought nothing much would come out of the seemingly uninteresting assignment, but I was mistaken. It proved to be an eye-opening day, mostly because I saw how much students were on their phones, I learned that I am terrible at telling time, and I can now cope with my social anxiety instead of jumping to my phone.…
