Personal Narrative: When I Get Genes In My Life

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I was afraid I was too personal in my post- but after reading others; I do not feel this way. To answer your question, I come from very poor genetic genes. However, I do not necessarily agree with the whole “genetics thing”. Yes, scientifically I know that I get genes from both parents, but I also feel that other factors contribute to when certain things such as health related issues. For instance, my mom has every health problem that you can think of (I am not exaggerating). Along with my mom, my older brother and my younger sister do too. I must add that they all live in the same area where I was born and raised. None of them eat healthy or workout. Now, I should have my mom’s genes and be

Gene, Thank you so much for your thoughtful responce to the story that I shared. In terms of my personal views towards spanking, after being exposed to so many different views I have decided that, one day when I have kids I won't be spanking my children at all. When I grew up I was spanked by my parents and I don't think that it had a negative effect on me or my views of my parents, but I do think it could be easy for it to be taken to far. As far as how I think that my view on this has effected my perception of God, it has not had a huge role, but looking forward to the kind of parent I want to be it plays a big role.…

Through my four years in high school, one of the toughest classes I faced was AP biology. The rigorous course involved an intense 48 chapter lesson plan with a 2 hour AP exam at the end of the school year. Near the end of my junior, I was skeptical of taking this class, as I heard from my fellow classmates that the class was difficult to earn a decent grade. With this in mind, I began preparing for the class over the summer by reading the textbook, and practicing using the workbook. As I read the book, I became deeply interested in this subject.…

My father has been in the military for 30 years. His career has taken him and my family, to every corner of the world. The Air Force is a demanding career path to choose; often the spouse is left with the full weight of the chores to be done on the home front. During the course of my upbringing these duties were, in part, delegated to my sisters and I. While we never experienced “a life of almost tropical idleness’ (CITATION) like the children of Jane Smiley, we became effective and efficient members of our house hold. We learned to respect our house and our family.…

My family of origin was comprised of my parents, myself, and my younger brother. David was born three years after me, and we filled the functional roles of “oldest child” and “youngest child” perfectly. As described by McGoldrick, Gerson, & Petry (2008), “oldest children are likely to be the over responsible and conscientious ones in the family” (p.126). I was always expected to perform academically and conduct myself with high moral standards. I did as was expected, and I do not remember ever questioning the situation.…

Family Introduction Creating this genogram was a difficult task for me because my parents and their siblings hardly communicate with each other anymore. Ever since the passing of both my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother, the families have simply fallen apart. Most people would kill to have my genes. My genes could have been considered the eighth wonder of the world. Everyone was amazed by the precision and beauty behind them. The phrase, ¨He comes from your side of the family” is used by many to explain why someone, a child maybe, has done something terrible or something that they should not have. To some, It is believed that genetics, or Nature, are the sole reason for a person's behavior, good or bad. Others believe that it is the environment that influences a person's behavior, and the environment can be anything or anyone- society, a community, a caretaker, or Nurture. The debate of Nurture vs Nature is an ongoing argument that has yet to be solved, but it is clear that Nurture is the most influential. Genetics, race, and biology do have somewhat of an impact on how a person deals with certain things, but it is the environment in which that person grew up in…
