Personal Narrative: What It Means To Be Human

Great Essays
In this famous quote by Mark Twain, he discusses how he views the importance of finding ones meaning in life, and what it means to them to be a human. To many people, being human is about being free, or just being kind. To fully be human one must not only show one single trait but many traits. There are many texts and lectures that have influenced what it means to me to be human. Texts such as Machinal by Sophie Treadwell and speakers like Chris Baker of Ink 180 have shown me what it truly means to be human. By comparing and contrasting earlier ideas of the course to Ink 180 and Machinal, my own and other people’s meaning of humanity can be shaped to see that equality, compassion and freedom, together are what makes us fully human. Past texts have revealed that individually compassion, equality or freedom truly make us human, however, we must combine all of these things to fully get a grip on what it is to be human. The text titled …show more content…
At the beginning of this class, I saw kindness as the key thing that makes us human. I value kindness because as a child I was made fun of a lot for the way I talk and who I am. When I was younger, I always saw those who were unkind as somewhat less than human. Today I realize that kindness; equality and freedom are all the things that make me human. Because I am gay, I know I will always be treated different because of it. I value equality because even though I am gay, it is only one small thing about me. I hope that one day everyone will be treated equally. Baker has shown me that small things about people, their tattoos may be a symbol to something about them or in their past, but they are so much more than that small aspect. Freedom has also always been an important factor to what makes me human. Ink 180 and Machinal have shown me that when someone is forced to not be free, they are made less than

The person responsible for this tragic event is defined as a “hateful person” who attempted to separate a community. His actions demonstrate the “looseness” Mark Twain argues that man has in his morals. In his essay, “The Lowest Animal”, Twain claims that man is the bottommost animal because he contains a conscience that makes him aware of the rightness and wrongness of his actions.…

Humanity, at its roots are a skittish, distrustful bunch, whom given the proper provocation, can lash out at their closest friends or form pacts with their mortal enemies. This is the nature that Thomas Hobbes describes in his reading “Leviathan”, which is his thesis on the nature of humans in regards to one and other, as well as their motives for the treatment they give. In mythology, a Leviathan is a massive sea beast described in the Christian Bible, and in his novel Hobbes draws parallels between this massive beast and human nature, describing humanity as an ultimately selfish and gluttonous creature who serves only itself. This reading provided by Hobbes is a valid and very insightful claim based around real human behaviours and how our mistrust of one and other clearly resonates in actions that seem otherwise monotonous or normal. In chapter thirteen of his thesis, he goes to great pains to describe the nature of humans when faced with competition, whether it is in minor details or in raging warfare.…

What is the best picture we can have of ourselves? Is it true that we resemble avocados with a constant bio-mental center or general human substance, or would we say we are more similar to an onion or an artichoke shaped by layers of "society, authentic age, textuality, class, ethnicity, sex, age, level of social force" (261)? The inquiries are particularly human. As the twentieth century analyst Abraham Maslow finished up, "The inconvenience is that the human species is the main species which thinks that it’s difficult to be an animal groups" (The Farther Reaches of Human Nature). In the third release of his Theories of Human Nature, Peter Loptson inspects twelve conceivable responses to the topic of being a person.…

Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that determines right from wrong by focusing on the end outcomes (O’Brien). Greek philosophers defined what is ethical as that which creates the greatest balance of pleasure over pain, in other words the greatest good for the greatest number. In business, utilitarianism is usually the most frequent approach to moral reasoning because of the way it considers for cost. Utilitarianism only considers the consequences of an action and in this case utilitarianism considers Apple to be unethical. The theory says that it is ethical if we create and give happiness to ourselves and others.…
