Personal Narrative: What I Learned In The Classroom

This week, I dove right in and started picking up a couple of things in Mrs. Herrold's classroom. To begin, I took over the morning routine of the "Daily Fix-It" worksheets, calendar, and morning meeting. Through morning meeting, I was able to get to know the students a little bit better. I asked them questions like: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "What is your favorite animal?" "If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it?" Also, I started taking over the whole group math lesson on Tuesday. We started a new chapter on place value. I've already learned a ton from teaching these whole group lessons. They have been nowhere near perfect (In fact, I feel like I just confused the students more than anything), but I've taken the successes and failures and really looked at what I need to do to be a better teacher. In addition, I started the book "Help! I'm a Prisoner Trapped in the Library!" with the high group, and began "Freckle Juice" with the middle group.

As I was teaching the whole group math lesson, a couple of my students had been given multiple warnings to stop talking and continued to be disruptive, so I sent both of them to the safe seat. Caden definitely didn't take it well. He ended up shoving all of my books and things (at the desk he was sent to) onto the floor. After I turned the students loose to finish up their workbook pages, I went over to talk to him, and it was pretty obvious that he still needed some time to calm his body and attitude, so I told him I would come back when he was ready. When Mrs. Herrold returned, I explained what happened, and she ended up taking him to the buddy room and made a phone call home. This was such a good experience for me -- I think I really need to work on making sure the students understand that my expectations for them are the same as the expectations Mrs. Herrold

In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…
