Personal Narrative: What I Learned In The Environment

Improved Essays
Up until about 2 years ago, almost all of my perceptions stemmed from what I learned in the environment I was raised in. I did not have my own opinions or beliefs. And I certainly did not have my own way of looking at things. Everything I knew was taken from my everyday life in the incredibly conservative and religious household I grew up in. It was only at eighteen that I took a step back and evaluated my life. Coming to the realization that I didn’t really have any perceptions of my own was haunting, to say the least. Starting over isn’t an easy thing to do. However, I could not ignore the fact that I was merely a product of what my parents created. For 18 years, they led, and I followed. I was not raised to question authority figures, and I never dared to either. Who knew that one question would precipitate into the birth of a new identity. Had I known then, I would have trod more carefully. …show more content…
I was definitely not “most eighteen year olds”. Instead of following the timeline society had meticulously constructed, I steered in another direction. I was headed nowhere,or so I thought. Not knowing who you are can make for a strange feeling, one that is no doubt hard to swallow. I wasn't looking to wipe away everything I knew just because it was specific to the environment I spent most of my years. Everything was significant to the individual I am, but I had yet to come to conclusions of my own. Beliefs and opinions of my own. I wanted to know who I really was, no matter how scary the

If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

In the summer of 2014, I picked up a book that changed my life forever. I was always a curious child. I’d ask my mother what were the little things that made her happy, I’d ask my father what he thought about himself when he was my age, I asked my sister if she had her future all planned out and I asked my friends if the rustling of leaving on a windy evening made them as happy as it made me. As I grew up, my questions changed, but my endless need to understand the world and the people in it more deeply, didn’t.…

When I grow up, I want to change the world! Changing the world one day would make me feel really good. Three ways I would change the world are: make sure everyone has a shelter to live in; help more lost, sick, and hurt animals, and make sure no one is hungry. I would like to help homeless people have a nice place to stay. When I’m driving downtown I see a lot of homeless people on the streets; dirty, and sad.…

The quiz was very interesting and I must say I enjoyed it. I never knew the smallest thing that we do on a regular can make an big impact on the environment such as taking a shower. My ecological footprint was very similar to yours. I believe a shower is very relaxing so I tend to take 10 minutes showers when it could be reduced to 7 minutes to save on gallons of water. I was mostly amazed by only eating meat only one night a week.…

I never understood until that night why I was different, but for whatever reason, to be a rebel I was. That night I lay in my brother’s bed, the smell of his worn out cologne used over and over again on the pillow, a younger image of him pinched between the wood and the mirror, the TV on a wooden stand drained out of its brown color facing me, and my back against the door. It didn’t mean anything. I was home in my home, my back against the door, shielded from the outside world.…

Today I realize that most of my beliefs and thought process have been heavily influenced by my home environment. However when asked with how I identify myself, I will stubbornly tell most people that I am Sabrina Scalfo, and I am simply me, with my own set of beliefs. Yet I know that these beliefs and the way I view certain aspects of life were all developed through…

What I learned about myself is that I have potential for being a global manager. Looking over the questions, I tend to lack in my experiences more than my actual skills. What I’ve learned is that I can adapt quick and connect with people easily, but I don’t have many experiences in it. To widen my range of experiences I would most likely have to travel more and emerge myself directly into new cultures. I would also have to study different languages a bit more for that is an area I very much lack in.…

The environment has always been a huge part of my life. I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts right on the river with my father; a wetland biologist, my mother; a biologist and science teacher, and my brother; a computer guy. Since I was little, I was taught to respect nature, and to leave it the way it is. While some children picked a flower to bring home, I would leave it be for others to enjoy, and for nature to flourish. Similar to beliefs and life lessons, it all depends upon how you were raised, and your past and current worldview.…

A kingpin for a father, a coke head for a mother, and a single wide trailer for a home, I always knew I had to make it out. Not much is expected from a girl who runs behind her brothers all day, because their mom lets them do whatever they want. Nor does anyone expect much from that same girl whose father has been out of her life since the age of four. It wasn’t that I was grown, or wanted to be, however when you see and know what I knew at a young age it changes you. I remember when “my daddy is on vacation” changed to “my daddy is in jail, for selling drugs.…

All that I had known vanished and I was forced to start new. When I started high school the desire to seek out something that could replace those values and beliefs became present. As the first day conspired I became the talk of my class when I showed up with my usual wardrobe absent. It was as though for so long I had been in an enclosed society that had hidden away the world from me and now I was free to grab it.…

    1. Growing up, my view of the environment was a conflicting mix of connection and disconnection. I was home-schooled for most of my elementary and high school years and for many of these years my family and I lived next to an evergreen forest—it was my extended classroom. I came to love this forest. I could see myself as a creature interdependent upon nature as described in the New Ecological Paradigm (Dunlap, pg. 333).…

It wasn 't till I was dismissed, full of doubt, and completely broken that I started to take stock of my own life. On a long drive one summer night I took a hard look at where I was in my life. I had stretched myself so thin that I couldn 't focus and manage all the plates I was spinning. I had lost who I was. It was time to stop playing games and really put in the work towards the real things that mattered.…

Suddenly I Became Me I started to figure out who I was during my lifetime. There are plenty of funny and terrible instances for me that made me find out who I was. I can name three instances from the top of my head like me picking my dad’s lock to get in the fridge when I was about four, when my biological mother decided to give me and my brother away when we were five and she wanted nothing to do with us, and when I went to my first summer church camp for the first time. I believe that these memories play a big role in making me the man I am today.…
