Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Senior Year

Improved Essays
I entered Clark with an understanding that in my senior year I would be taking both undergraduate and graduate-level classes. For that reason, I attempted to complete as many of my requirements, especially the ones I perceived to be the most difficult, earlier on in my academic career. The Community Development and Planning track requires undergrads to take two courses their senior year therefore I scheduled each semester so that I could take these required courses during my senior year. I have two requirements left for my International Development and Social Change major and I will be completing one in each semester. Additionally, I have one requirement left for Women's and Gender Studies, and three for a possible Spanish Minor. The subjects

Pre-Experience Journal Entry I was born to be an engineer. I grew up playing math games, building lego sets, and taking apart electronics. My Senior Capstone Experience (SCE) will definitely be in the area of engineering. More specifically, I would love to do either computer science or electrical engineering, as these are the areas I want to major in when I go to college. I came to GSMST because I have always had an interest in engineering, and GSMST has only made that interest stronger.…

Before high school, I always thought I was an average student, but when I transitioned into high school, people started to point out that I had potential. I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

I was unfamiliar with the process of choosing the order of courses that would transition me to graduation. As a result, I took several non-required courses, and I even took some of the needed courses, for my degree, out of order. Needless to say, I hit an academic wall that lasted five long semesters. It would have been easier for me to change majors for the sake of graduation, but being in such a predicament only sharpened my perseverance and molded my determination. While these academic complications seemed unbearable at the time, my senior year turned out to be my most challenging year.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

My first-year, second-semester writing class was Analytical Reading and Writing. My first impression of the course was that it is going to be a tough class but end up being reasonable it was neither too hard nor too easy. The class was designed to help improve and enhance critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. Learning how to identify key argument and supporting detail, how to synthesize texts. Although I’ve experienced so many transitions since late August, the most surprising of them has definitely been my propensity to establish friendships. I was surprised by this due to the fact that, as a high school student, I was always left out of activities because I was different from others since I worked extremely hard on my studies. I pursued my education in a small, public high school nestled in the suburbs, and education wasn’t a top priority among most of my peers. As an inevitable result, no one understood me, and I felt excluded from the rest of my class. When I came here, I expected my social life to be similar to that of my high school experience.…
