Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Writing Class

This past March, I was choosing my classes for my freshman year of high school. My mother and I were looking over the courses offered for first-year students at the high school, when we saw that all students are required to complete a writing course while they attended Bedford High School. There were three options for how I could attend the course. I could take the course; in school during the summer, in school during the school year, or online during the summer. After talking to current high school students and hearing a presentation from guidance counselors, I knew that I should take the class in the summer, so I could take an extra elective and not be stuck with as much homework during the school year. After narrowing down my choices to either taking the course …show more content…
Throughout this journey through In Writing, I have become a better writer overall and I will be able to apply my new skills that I’ve learned in this class throughout the school year in many different subjects. I have improved upon the weaknesses that I had before participating in this advantageous class. By taking this In Writing class, I have been able to substantially improve upon my skills as a writer. The main areas of my improvement are; sentence length and not having run-on sentences, the length of my thesis statement, and word choice.
With my word choice, I would previously use the same word over and over again where a better word or phrase could’ve been used in the same position. This would lead to my writing being repetitive and dull. For example, in the rough draft for the first Response to Literature essay, which I wrote on Robert Frost’s poem After Apple Picking, I wrote, “He has this indecision because he wants to chase his goals and dreams in his final days of his life, but he is so tired from all he has done in life that all he wants to relax and rest in his final moments of life. The line that shows the man still has dreams he wants

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

The first time, I enrolled in this class, I felt excited knowing this class would help on my grammar, so I can become a better writer. My first thought that cross my mind was this was going to be easy and it was. My last experienced with writing and English was okay because I mainly get a B or a C, but rarely I would get an A. I always been having trouble with grammars. My high school English teachers taught us about grammars and how to become a better writer. It was similar to what you had taught us in class because we always learned about grammar out of a book and we got tested after we been practice.…

I learned that all the prewriting is not the same there are different formats of writing. I haven't learned which essay writing best fits me. I believe that the one that fits me the most is the free writing because I can just write down anything and continue without stopping. I can write to whatever comes to mind and even though it doesn't make any sense I still write it down I feel that most of my best writing comes from free style writing. I can only do my best when I feel that I am able to more work under pressure and that I can relieve a lot of my stress by writing.…

When I find out the type of audience I am writing to, I have to change phrases around in my essay so that my specific audience can interpret what I am saying. When I was younger, I would eat up books faster than I got them. I’d frequently been caught reading books in the zaniest of places. I remember wanting to try writing, although I could never fully convey the words in my mind onto paper. Every once in a blue moon when I was able to; only I could understand what I wrote. It had fascinated me, and honestly frustrated me, that people could write these whimsical and arcane books that I’d held onto like a mother to her child.…

Writing has never been one of my strongest skills nor my favorite. Even though I enjoy reading another person’s writing the thought of someone else reading mine just sends chills down my spine. I wouldn’t consider myself a decent writer whatsoever. This defiantly gets in the way of how I feel about writing at times, because it makes me insecure of what others are going to think after they finish reading my essay. When I signed up for ENGL 1301 I was quick to assume the course was just going to consist of reading a lot of material and taking quizzes that covered the readings.…

I have to eat healthy, workout, practice, watch film, then practice specific techniques in order to prepare for a game. While writing, I have a set of steps to follow so that I will have an organized and successful paper, such as prewriting, drafting, conferring with friends, editing, proofreading, and finally publishing. Who doesn’t struggle with writing? I know I always have struggled with writing, for the longest time I didn’t even really understand the differences in sentences, and it is something that’s still confuses me a little bit. To be completely honest I sometimes procrastinate longer than I should when it comes to writing, so I don’t always review the finished product the way I should. Life gets in the way occasionally, and I attempt to convince myself that I have plenty of time to finish they assignment. This particularly gave me problems in high school.…

I think that no matter what I am writing, I am always writing for a specific reader. Be it work emails or school assignments, I always keep in mind who I am writing to, so that my writing style does not come off as unprofessional, not respectful, or “too proper”. For example, in the design industry, you can never know whether a person will expect complete professionalism from you, or will he want to talk like a human instead of a robot. When writing emails to clients, coworkers or the boss, I first try to understand my audience and “predict” what level of professionalism will they expect from me, and only then I will send my email to avoid making a fool of myself.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
