Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Class

Decent Essays
Overall, I cannot say I hated this class. I have learned a lot from it and have had some fun times as well. My skills as a writer are, I hope, at least average. Before taking this class my skills were far below average, sadly. I was terrible with grammar and word choice. I use a lot of the same words and grammar while verbally speaking, which reflects into my essays. I tend to repeat myself multiple times within the same paper because I have ran out of new things to say. Most of the time you will see some of the same words in my sentences, rather than finding bigger, more educative words to fill their positions. I am not the type of person to do a lot of work, truly, I’m very lazy. I do not like to search up new or different words,

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

My first-year, second-semester writing class was Analytical Reading and Writing. My first impression of the course was that it is going to be a tough class but end up being reasonable it was neither too hard nor too easy. The class was designed to help improve and enhance critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. Learning how to identify key argument and supporting detail, how to synthesize texts. And throughout the semester I made an improvement on the areas of critical thinking, reading, and writing.…

At the start of the English 1A semester there a couple of things that I seemed to struggle with. First was I hadn’t written much of anything at all since high school had ended for me nearly four years ago, though I do try to keep a personal journal and loved writing poetry growing up. Between work, a dog, maintaining social activities and the daily hassles of life, writing quickly became an old past time. So, when sitting in class on my first day and being told to freewrite about anything, I froze not remembering how to just write though I am a girl who normally has plenty to say.…

I remember this day like it was yesterday. My teacher told our class to go down the row saying one to five. Leading everyone to yell that they want to pick their own partner. I remember me saying two and later on Bridgette saying two. We both looked at each other giving each other the dirtiest look and rolling our eyes.…

I first started taking this class because It was one which my advisor had suggested. I was apprehensive at first, but after a few of the activities, it started gaining my interest. I can say that not only have a few tools that I can use for the rest of my time at excelsior, I’ve also discovered a few things about myself that I didn’t know existed. One of the things it has helped me with is having all the classes and exams I need to graduate scheduled and approved by my advisors in my academic planner.…

As my best friends, Daniesha, Derrick, Lashantae, and I entered the classroom, we could already sense that we were out of place. Green Team was run by the eighth grade general science teacher, Mr. Lincoln, who wasn’t the biggest fan of my friends, or in his words “you need friends just as great of a student as you”. Daniesha, Derrick, and Lashantae weren’t the type of people I expected to become so close to, they accepted D’s on their report cards, they cursed, and bullied our classmates for fun. Despite all of these things, they lived in my neighborhood and found me to be funny (in a cheesy way), so I guess I stuck around because I enjoyed being accepted for something I always felt awkward about. With Mr. Lincoln as the facilitator of Green…

The one time that I learned and impacted my life drastically was the first year that I moved to the U.S. I learned to talk and I learned to read. People still judge the way I spell, say, or pronounce, a certain word. It used to bother me how others could say “Karen can you say refrigerator” or another word that they knew I struggled to say. As I’ve gotten older I have realized that I was actually ahead of the class by being bilingual. I learned more than they did by the the end of my second grade year.…

I came into this class kind of dreading to take it, for I’m not a fan of writing essays. I’m glad I took this class, though, for a couple of reasons: one it was online, it was in the middle of the summer, and then the course was stretched over an 8-week course. I came in here just trying to get my credit for my major, but I’ve taken into liking of some of the authors we’ve covered and check out some of their works after this course. I would say or like to think, that I’ve become better and writing my essay, also become easier to write. I used to think that a 500-word essay was a challenge, but now I can knock those out in an hour.…

Another bad experience that made me the writer I am now, was the English class I took my senior year. Everyone painted senior year to be the easiest year of all and that the teachers are not as demanding since it is your last year. The completely opposite happened to me, of course, I had put myself through another high level class, this time it was not honors but AP! What the hell was I thinking? I had chosen to take an AP English class with Santa Claus.…

In the dusty, air conditioned, drama room behind the cafeteria, I was taught a very important lesson that took three years to learn, and the rest of my life to remember. I never realized that one sentence could be so powerful. When I first heard the famous quote, I never knew it would become apart of me. Little did I know the relevance it would have in terms of my life, in the years following. I would carry those words with me and let them guide me through my decisions up to today.…

I could smell the scent of cold dew wafting from the ajar windows, while piles of projects cluttered the window space. There were leaning towers of cardboard pinball boxes, stacks of papers, and books scattered throughout the classroom. In addition, I could see a glimpse of glimmering grass from out the window between the paper monuments. Air billowed in as if the classroom was alive and drawing a breath. Shoe squeaks echoed down the halls in tempo with Latin music.…

I went into the spring of 2016 semester taking on too much, too many classes, too many hours at work, and too many charity events with my fraternity of sigma tau gamma. I started off thinking that I would be able to take 18 credit hours of school while working anywhere from 20 to 25 hours a week and still find room to attend all of the philanthropy events put on by sigma tau gamma. Simply put, my struggle with the spring of 2016 semester was due to myself taking on too many things at once. My struggle started almost as soon as the semester began. The main cause of my problems was trying to balance the homework from my classes with work.…

The journey of learning is a never ending one, I like to look at it as metamorphoses, much like the life of a caterpillar: a process of constant evolution from being an egg to becoming a butterfly. From the moment one is born, he/she is exposed to a strange collection of sounds. It is not long before the brain deciphers these collections as a code or pattern used to convey a message. Babies communicate through their actions like crying, frowning and reaching out for toys. Before too long they realize that communication through actions is very ineffective and thus with a lot of effort they utter their first word.…
