Personal Narrative: What I Learned In High School?

Improved Essays
Only after my second year of high school, I was propelled into the adult world with full responsibility placed on my shoulders. It was the first time I was going to be away from my parents for a while and I needed to make it through seven weeks without them. I resided in a dormitory and lived with the people whose names I didn’t know until the day before. To further add on to the stress, I needed to take a placement test on a subject that I learned by myself to show that I was capable of the higher level thinking that the rigorous class demanded. This was a school famous for its high prestige, therefore I prepared myself for its burdensome challenges. I was surprised and relieved to find out that I ended up passing the placement exam, but I …show more content…
Seeing it through would yield a higher reward. The school took care of its students to ensure they can fully grasp the subject if they had any problems. I fully devoted myself to the class and began studying any concepts that I was not understanding. Since I felt overwhelmed with homework every day, I joined a class group so I could think like my classmates thought. When I felt that I was getting behind my classmates, I received tutoring. When a strenuous homework problem seemed impossible, I would seek out my professor during office hours and ask for help. Once it appeared to feel like I fit into the class, I began challenging myself further by going ahead of the schedule. I wanted to feel prepared for the three hours of class that I would have the next day, therefore I read the outline of what we would do that day. Once class started, I was able to easily follow the concepts presented, which allowed me finish my homework faster. With this extra time, I could explore the campus further and visit the attractions around where I was staying. That summer experience not only prepared me for how post-secondary education will go, but also how I can turn a class around if I devote enough time to it, regardless of how challenging it seems at the

The hardest thing I’ve ever went through? Let me take you back to almost three years ago to a very cold Thursday morning in January. I was sitting in history class when suddenly something very strange happened; the announcement speakers came on. To most people it would seem like it was a very typical day to day event to listen to announcements; but at my school announcements were rarely ever said. My classroom got completely silent; to the point where you could have heard a pin drop.…

Before high school, I always thought I was an average student, but when I transitioned into high school, people started to point out that I had potential. I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

The following months passed, and I began to reflect on the significance of this setback and what it meant for my own character. Maybe I didn’t deserve to be accepted, but one truth was undeniable; I had put all of my effort into my application. My dedication and commitment to tasks, both inside and outside the classroom, helped me to cultivate the skills needed to succeed in challenging situations, to face the unknown in the future. Every obstacle in life could be seen as a reason to admit defeat or, on the other hand, an opportunity to overcome and learn from. If I had been accepted on that day, it’s possible that I never would have learned that…

The first goal for me is to start doing my homework more and turn it in for all of my classes and now I will do this by having a reminder. My second goal is to listen to the teacher while she is talking and to not talk to my friends while she/he is talking. My third and final goal is to get to school on time a lot more by setting an alarm to wake me up in the morning.…

Track and field has been the highlight of my high school life. The social aspect, the large assortment of events from which to choose, and the people I met are things I will always treasure. I especially loved the fact that there was always a place for everyone. If you weren’t too quick, then discus was your event. If you could build up quick bursts of speed, long and triple jumps suited you.…

I was unfamiliar with the process of choosing the order of courses that would transition me to graduation. As a result, I took several non-required courses, and I even took some of the needed courses, for my degree, out of order. Needless to say, I hit an academic wall that lasted five long semesters. It would have been easier for me to change majors for the sake of graduation, but being in such a predicament only sharpened my perseverance and molded my determination. While these academic complications seemed unbearable at the time, my senior year turned out to be my most challenging year.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

What I learned about myself is that I have potential for being a global manager. Looking over the questions, I tend to lack in my experiences more than my actual skills. What I’ve learned is that I can adapt quick and connect with people easily, but I don’t have many experiences in it. To widen my range of experiences I would most likely have to travel more and emerge myself directly into new cultures. I would also have to study different languages a bit more for that is an area I very much lack in.…

I have involved myself in high school in many ways that I could. As far as athletics go, I have played volleyball and I am currently Vice President of the POM squad at Putnam City North. I am also a junior representative officer for the PCN National Honor Society. In my high school career, I have been involved in various clubs such as Key Club, Spanish Club, and Ping Pong Club.…

I can recall my recent summer when I challenged myself to do tremendous homework. Looking back to my previous summers, they are all boring, so I encouraged myself to take drivers education for my license next year, test out of Algebra 2 and P.E., work at my parent’s nail salon to earn some cash, do my AP History and Advanced English homework, practiced my viola for Symphonic Orchestra, read during the night, and study for the S.A.T. (which was indeed, way too early for me). I was prompted to act because I recently found my ambitions for my future. My goals are to become some sort of engineer (undecided, but it’s related to this field), have the highest GPA possible, and get accepted into University of Michigan These ambitions didn’t hit me at the speed of light, but naturally throughout my ninth grade as I transition to a broader level of education.…

Imagining life after highschool seems nearly unfathomable, and yet it's practically at arms reach. It seems like just yesterday, I was running late for my first day of highschool and stressing over having to memorize 5 vocabulary words; little did I know that it only got harder from there. The older I get, the more people try to give me advice on what to expect in life. More often than not, they say, “life only gets harder” and I have no choice but to believe them. I’ve not yet had the chance to experience life at its peak, but I know that I’m absolutely terrified for what comes with it.…

Throughout my entire life, I have encountered, had conversations with, and have been given advice by many great people. The best advice given to me although was by my dad when I was in the tenth grade, be yourself. I was being bullied in school because I was not like everyone else. I didn't skip class with the "cool kids", talk disrespectfully to any adults, I was smaller than all of the other freshman and football players, and I was never getting into trouble like everyone else. After my entire freshman year of being bullied, I brought it upon myself in the tenth grade to try and change some things about myself.…
