“We’re moving.”
How many times had I heard this already? I vividly recollect the times my parents had informed me we were going to move. It seemed like we had just finished unpacking the boxes that were covering the house. I lived in Florida at the time, where the weather could not become any better. I tried to imagine Ohio.
What was there to do there? How would I be able to make new friends? Starting over in a new place was far from quintessential. When we moved to Florida about 3 years before, I was scared to death by the move, I had only known the little country

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

MOVING FROM STATE TO STATE TO STATE (only 3 times but 4 different houses) (this is also partially my life story) I was born in Salt Lake City, UT. I had to stay in the hospital for about 2 weeks because I had minor bleeding in my brain & a small hole in my lung. We then lived in a duplex, and my dad was a youth pastor at Mountain Side Baptist Church in Sandy. Then I think when I was a little over 1 year old, my dad became the pastor of our church, so we got to live in a parsonage for free as part of my dad’s salary.…

When I moved to Orlando, Florida, I was twelve years old. I did not know what to expect when it came to the Orlando weather, their school system or their people. My mom called me one day when I was on my way home from school and told me we would be moving, at the time I did not know where we were moving to, but I knew I was not going to be okay with moving away from my neighborhood friends who I have been friends with since the second grade. Once I came home, the majority of our house was already in boxes and I refused to pack any of my belongings because at the time I did not want to accept the fact that we were moving to an entire different state.…

When I meet a new person in London their first question is “Where are you from?” This is mostly because I am clearly not British, nor European. People often assume I’m American, at which point I have to patiently explain that I am Canadian, no I don’t live in an igloo, but my parents do drive their snowmobiles to work sometimes… The second question is “Where in Canada are you from?” Then I tell them about being from a small town in Ontario, but that I actually spent the last few years living and working in the Rocky Mountains.…

One of the many problems I had with this move was the scenery; pretty interesting throughout the drive until we entered the state of California. I felt that horrible sick feeling while thinking, “Who in the hell would want to live in this place!” I hated the scenery of the desert and the homes; so close together, the deficiency of space and trees; that was a bomb exploding. This ripped through the shreds of my soul that were becoming loosely stitched. My father had taken a detour towards the beach; we were merely permitted to stand and observe; I honestly can say, no excitement existed with this scenery.…
