Personal Narrative: Water Skiing

The crisp ripples of the water left my skin as I began to grow out of the water. The sun beat down on my eyes as a squinted trying to see. This last couple week of August I was spending time in South Carolina at my grandparent's house. We went there every year to see them and spend time with them on their lake.

It was our first day out of trying to water ski with my sisters and my grandparents. We loaded everything up in the speedboat as we jumped off the dock and headed out onto the lake. I was the last to take my turn water skiing. I jumped in the freshwater swimming my way towards shore. My grandma came out in the water with me to help me get the water skis on for the first time. I slid my foot into the neoprene boot. It was a different feeling compared to normal shoes. The boots were tight fitted attached to the long ski.

I maneuvered around in circles trying to get the skis in front of me. It took about 10 minutes for me to finally get the skis beneath me. I was not on the shore anymore with the sand to help guide me. I grabbed a hold of the red handle and pretended like I was sitting in a chair. I called to my grandpa that I was ready and he started the engine and took off. I got as far as my knees midway in the air and fell to the side immediately.

After many tries later I tried one last time before I was going to be done for the day. I was able to move into my feet beneath me a lot easier now. I grabbed a hold of the rope with the bar and I was set. I signaled to my grandpa to start up the boat. Around me, the water grew a faster stream as if trickled off my growing body from the water. My knees bent upwards towards the sky as I stared at the boat trying to concentrate on keeping my balance. My feet wobbled beneath me with the quickening water catching speed. I was not straight up in the air but with an ease in leaning

One of the most common mistakes people make is that they define talent and skill synonymously. However, they are two completely different things. Talent you have naturally, you don’t have to work at it. Skill is ability developed from hours and hours of practice at your craft. My best talent is by far my ability to succeed in school, and my natural affinity for STEM topics.…

When we left, we were about to go on a boat and go deep sea fishing with other people on the boat that we didn't know. So when we got on the boat and got our fishing poles ready, we sat down waiting for the boat to start. When we left the dock I was nervous because I have never been far out in the sea. When we were out on the water I was scared for about an hour then I got use to it. When we got to our destination, everyone started fishing.…

In eighth grade I had decided I wanted to swim competitively and run track within the same day. I would run with the track team after school, then go directly to swim practice, with the only rest in between the two was the thirty minute car ride over. As well as the only thing for me to eat was a builder's bar, or whatever my father had in his car. Competing in two sports a day wore me out and took a tool on my body. I was offered to swim with a lower class that was at a later time in the day, by my coach.…

The bright red light of the alarm clock flashes 7:00 in my face. Although it’s very early my brain refuses to feel drowsy as it is used to the time back home, 9:00. My aunt is still dreaming away in the other bed as I creep out of my room, following the scent of coffee. My aunt and uncle are calmly sitting on the couch, sipping away at their coffee as my eyes are blinded by the light reflected in the powder snow. Good mornings are exchanged as I make my breakfast.…

This is an impactful moment in my life because every Saturday and Sunday we would go up there. When it was a blizzard up there and we didn’t feel like skiing we would go into snorkels (which is a little place where you can buy food and drinks) and get hot chocolate and whip cream if you ask. One weekend we got a room up there and every night we would go swimming in the pool every night. It was super cool to have a room because we would be one of the first people on the lift every morning, and have the first tracks down the…
